I learn a lesson every day from my 4 month old.  If at first he can't grab that toy, he tries, tries again.  Just because daddy makes you mad one minute does not mean that you should still be mad five minutes from now.  My favorite?  You can get anywhere and everywhere with a little smile.

Not quite the smile I mean...I was in the service profession from the beginning, one of the first people to work at the "new" Burger King in Rogers, Minnesota at 14 years old.  Yes, that Burger King that is now surrounded by so much other stuff it boggles the mind.  That Burger King where two years after they opened (no dates, I'm not dating myself here!) a deer dove through the glass windows in the children's play area.  (What a fun insurance claim that had to be!)  I worked restraunts, retail, hotel management, receptionist positions, and then finally landed in real estate.  I know that you smile and are happy and always joked that I had to "stretch my face back out of that smile" when I got home from work.

While I'm pretty sure that my smile is hardly as captivating as a four month old's, I'm 99% sure that I can work on showing it off a little more.  Smiles do magic.

It's easy to not feel like smiling in this market, and I can completely understand that.  While my business has changed from motivating home buyers to pick that perfect house and announce to home sellers that we're in a multiple offer situation to mold disclosures, as-is where-is, and trashouts, I've seen some of the "magic" of our positions as Realtors lost.  We're bogged down with the cost of operation, the inflated costs of advertising and groceries, and the sudden "depersonalization" of what was once a friendly, all-parties-at-the-closing-table transaction.  Where are the days where two agents chatted about the weather and how each other's children were doing before closing?

Whatever 2009 may bring, (and for me it's more and more REO's, I know that already.) I am determined to take it all on with a smile bigger and brighter than the years before.  There are many things that can bring us down right now, but there are also many things to be quite pleased about.  Those of us who are here and here to stay have each other, and we are far from a Titantic situation.  I know some people are jumping on the life boat and paddling away as fast as they can, but 2008 was a good year, and 2009 can be better!

So what I'll remember in this next year, the number one line on my 2009 business plan; When you get up in the morning, remember - you're never fully dressed without a smile.Smiling tree

That is a cute line to remember.  I always try to smile especially when I am around strangers.  I don't like to have a sour puss face.

You're spot-on. I need to work on my smile. When I don't, I look very serious. When I smile I look attractiing and friendly. I've been working on it. Thanks for the reminder.

Joslyn, this is one I need to work on more often. Something to keep in mind. Life is so much more fun when you're smiling :)

That is one of the most important aspects of our job, which Realtors never think about.  When you are smiling it puts everyone at ease and shows warmth to all those around you.  When I speak on the phone I have a mirror before me and it helps with my phone calls, ensuring that I am smiling while on the phone.

Children are so great! Adults can learn something new each day from children.  It is amazing when you smile, you just feel better. Go ahead, lets all try a smile. Don't you feel better.

Smiling will always break the ice!  Even if you are having a miserable day, show the smile and you will be accepted better!  As an Insurance agent, I could only imagine the deer claim at the Burger King!

HEY harbor man....HEY Daper Dan. This has to be one of the all time great songs from Broadway. My kids and I love it. And it is a good mantra to live by. Ironically, a Production like Annie has a lot to offer in todays economy. Since it was set in the great depression. We'd like to thank you President Bush...for really showing us the way...

Mary - And you never know who might really need to see that smile!

Lori - What a good idea!  I always end with have a great day, and my emails are (maybe too much!) full of jokes, happy stuff, and smiles.

Caron's Gateway - Life's no fun if you don't laugh.

Andrew - I tend to get a little too serious looking, too, and I forget that I should stop and enjoy the moment.

Jim - Don't feel bad.  I've had it stuck in my head for two days now.  Every time I get a new comment, it comes back!  :)

Tony & Darcy - Such a great point!  I was never one to notice clothes.  I notice people's personalities more.  Don't you wish you could convince teenagers of this?

Andrew - And laughing.  I love to make my little guy laugh!

Ryan - The mirror idea is a great one.  I always try to remember it when I'm dealing with a stressful situation, or something that may be tense especially.  Retail thinking.

Kathleen - Ha!  I started noticing those last month, and I thought at first, horrified "I'm only 25!  I can't get lines yet!"  Then I realized that those lines are lines to be proud of!

David - Well, almost any awkward situation... lol.  Sometimes there's just no saving it.

Catherine - Thanks!

Bosshardt Realty Services, Inc. - I bought it on DVD (the original, with Bette Midler!) last year.  One of my favorites!

Roland - Thanks!

I also worked at Burger King when I was 15 yrs old!  It was the only restaurant in my small town.  :-)  Your post also reminds me of my brief (6 month) career as a telemarketer in college... our manager always said "Smile & Dial".  Even when you weren't in the mood to pick up that phone, as soon as you did it a few times -- with a SMILE -- it really made all the difference.

Great post!

KERRY - I wonder if your manager and I were related.  I can't tell you how many times I was reminding people to smile while in retail management.  Sometimes I spent so much time reminding everyone else that I forgot to do it myself!

I love your title.  It is a great reminder that we are not sales people....we are in a service business.  And if we don't enjoy it (which I do!) then we should get out!  This should be a fun business since we help people!

AMEN!  My former pastor used to look at you and say "SMILE when you say that!" if you looked too serious.  I'm one of those people with a very unfriendly-looking "serious" face - if I'm not smiling, I look MAD even if I'm not.

Excellent reminder.

great post. Great attitude, and so true. Its easy to complain and moan, and I run across plenty of agents that do just that. I make an effort every day to check my attitude, and answer the phone even with a smile! It really helps

Joslyn,  Before I jumped into real estate twelve years ago, I was a social worker.  One of our cliches was 'fake it 'till you make it.'  It works.  Smile when you feel like crying and all of a sudden the smile becomes real.  It's hard to complain with a smile on your face.  And when you answer the phone, smile.  Believe it or not, the person on the other end of the line can 'hear' the smile.  I love your attitude and I just know you and I will be standing when the dust settles.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
