I Think 'The Secret' Is Horsehockey!

By
Real Estate Agent with Leigh Brown & Associates, RE/MAX Executive

That's Southern for 'crap'. If you didn't have your dictionary handy.

Perhaps it's my personality type, which is mostly D (you can learn more about DISC profiles and do testing at www.resourcesunlimited.com), and doesn't have a lot of patience for any of the new-age, touchy-feely, self esteem talk.

Well, I got an email a couple of days ago called 'The Difference Between The Work and The Secret.'  It really made me smile!  While I do agree that there's merit in having a positive outlook on life in general, folks need to know that just wishing and hoping for the best outcome doesn't mean it's going to happen.  Life was never a guaranteed free and easy ride!  At what point did our society decide that no unfortunate events would happen?  That kids shouldn't have skinned knees and that illness never happens?  The Secret seems to be promoting a mindset that you can have what you want by thinking positively that you can have what you want...

The most poignant thing I read noted that one of the differences between The Work and The Secret is that The Secret believes YOU know what's best for you and that you control your destiny.  The Work believes that God knows what's best and that His will shall be done.  Pretty powerful stuff to consider.

Guess I'll hang my hat in the camp of those who put their heads down and work regardless of what's going on around them, and not just hope that it's going to happen.  My favorite CE instructor here in the Charlotte NC real estate, Bill Gallagher,  likes to talk about how we need to quit 'haulin' and hopin' with buyers, talking more about agency and professional direction instead.  Which means to me that if I have a business plan and I work my plan as hard as I can, the goals might be reached...if I don't have a plan but just think positively that I'll reach that same goal, do you reckon it's going to happen?  Highly unlikely.

You can correlate all of this to pricing a listing.  If you're putting a pie in the sky price on a house, and just thinking positive thoughts that IT WILL SELL, is that going to produce a buyer? If a buyer appears, is that going to make it appraise?

Or do you price it within range of what's going on around you, get your condition right, make it available for showings, and let The Work get to it?  Sure, you can still think positive thoughts-and you should, because you have placed yourself in the hands of a real estate professional who has advised you of the right steps to take-and IT WILL SELL.

To me, that's the difference in The Real Estate Work and The Real Estate Secret.  No secrets, no 'glengarry glen ross' leads.  Just hard, consistent work.

Caleb, please share your reasoning behind 'unfeaturing' this post?

I want to expand on my previous post to emphasize why I believe this post should have stayed featured. I have a lot of friends who have read "The Secret" and were all excited after reading it. They talked my ear off about it for weeks on end and did NOTHING different with their lives. I'm not saying that is what the books is suggesting anyone does, but almost all the people I know who rant and rave about this book have done nothing to change their lives after reading it.

I have a close family member who spent $16,000 on a "coaching program" that is just a regurgitated version of the Secret. That is just RIDICULOUS.

This post is just waking people up to the need for doing and not just "thinking". It's too bad all the controversy got your post unfeatured Leigh. I've bookmarked it and if you add it to my group I'll gladly feature it there.

Guess I should have saved this post for my other blog-one of the main tenets of building a blog is building some controversy, right?  Alas.  Next time I'll call it a cult and see what happens.

Leigh,

Wow, you caused quite a controversy. I believe the Secret is hard work, a sense of humor, respect for others and God first! I still don't know why the post was UNfeatured. Best!

I think this is an interesting discussion and a I've seen a lot of very thoughtful comments and I hope they continue.  When I see a post that I didn't want featured I'll often take it down.  It's not that this post is poor, or violates any guidelines.  Leigh you write great stuff, it's just not in line with what I envision for featured posts.  I might have missed others that aren't quite in-line, however I saw this one the others I didn't.  Nothing promoting the movie should have been featured either, but others have let me know that they have.  I am sorry about that.

I have to say.. i think the basic message of "the secret" was good one.   Did it get alot of publicity, sure it did...  People often look for a "quick fix" and the secret is not.   Its a way of life...   Believe me I am not preaching.. just believe in the general message as I interpreted it.

Hmmm....now that was interesting. Featured then unfeatured. I got to think about that one. I must be missing something here. Is the controversy in the post or the comments? The way I read the post it was talking about the difference between sitting back and waiting on fate or positive thinking to work instead of getting off your rear and working and creating your own fate. Maybe it's the mention of "The Secret" which I know nothing about except it's a book, a movie and a "new" way of thinking. Maybe it's just late and I'm missing something. I'll be back, Again:)

I talked to Caleb about it, BB, because I was quite curious.  Got the impression that mentioning God in a post is a no-no if you want to be featured.  And this wasn't even a religious post in the slightest, just my personal rant about The Secret.  Also got the impression that he felt the conversation was getting too heated for his liking and for the good of the community.  So we agreed to disagree.  Let me help you, my friend, save your time and energy for TLW and don't read that mess.  Work hard, help your clients succeed and keep on keepin on!

Thanks Leigh, I guess I can understand that. It is their site and they do have to err on the side of caution when it comes to religion and the such being on the front page. Very good post though Leigh. Good ones rise to the top whether they are featured or not.

Thanks, BB.  I think we all forget at times that it's THEIR site and ultimately their liability.  But golly, I'd rather have some fun controversy to read than another 'my first post' post...=)

Honestly I thought the movie got plenty of hype behind it and I don't want to be promoting or debating it on the featured list.  I've heard that a few posts on this topic may have been featured I hadn't realized that.  To my knowledge it is a commercial enterprise with a very effective marketing campaign behind it.  I have no reason to believe it's anything else.

I am with BB, totally clueless about "the secret" although I realize it is the buzz on the streets.  I just love the spunk that you gave with this "review" because I have seen nothing but good things about it.  I hate passive activities so thanks for saving my time :)

I understand where you are coming from but in a way disagree.  Yes, it is all about hard work and putting your nose to the grindstone.  I don't know if I totally agree with "The Secret" but I do know that attitude is really important.  When my attitude is good, my busines is usually good.  When my attitude sucks, so does my business.  So whether you want to call it positive thinking, the law of attraction or whatever... you do affect the people around you.  No one wants to go to dinner with someone who is going to complain about how bad the service is and how rotten their dinner was.  Obviously, it's more enjoyable to be with people who are positive.  So in a way, I do believe you can attract "happy" people based on your "happy" mood because people will want to be around you.  As far as, attracting $$$ and such, I don't know if that works or not. I do believe in the ask, believe, receive because of my religious background and that's what I go back to.

I wrote an article on "The Secret" as well.  I haven't figured out how to link it for you to see it, but you can check out under my blog.

Leigh, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I actually liked the secret. But,filtered some of the hoochey and applied the relevant parts. The key to success after you plan and get the attitude in line is purely "massive action". No work no results.

I struggle with relying on any supreme power for the results. I've lived by the saying, "pray as though everything depends on God, then work as though everything depends on you".

If that offends some, sorry. Get over it. Each is entitled to their view. I love hearing others views, and am not afraid to share mine.

Thanks again. Guess I should have read all the comments.

Leigh - You didn't get where you are by wearing rose colored glasses.  You have worked your tukas off! Of course, you do have a very positive vibe around you and that is wonderful for your business as well.  The Secret  isn't a religion.  It is a book.  Does it claim to be a religion?  I haven't heard that.  This is an awesome post I think the controversy in the comments has been handled well on both sides.

Leigh, to many comments for me to be reading this late at night, but I will say this, if you don't have a plan than how will you know how to get to where you want to be.  But just having a plan does not get it done, you have to work it.  If someone just sits back and hopes for it to happen it never will.

Leigh,

You know I have not read the "Secret" at all. But, I must say GOD is my strenght. Period. I will not ever be afraid to say it! I think if we sneeze hard, people can be offended. This goes back to what my grand mother would say, "People will hate you when you're doing good and people will hate you when you're doing bad, so just be yourself and be true to yourself." With this,  I try my best to work hard and have a balanced life. It's a constant goal to achieve. I also flee from negative people. Boy, they can kill a dream!

I've also had the pleasure to have Bill Gallagher as an instructor! He's awesome and never boring.  What he's saying regarding hoping and hauling is so true. It makes sense. Can you believe, there's still agents who show homes to people before asking or obtaining a Pre-Approval letter? When we do not plan, we plan to fail. Creating a business plan is very important. You certainly don't need any fancy software to do it. You can easily utilize a template to do so. I create my business plan every year on MS PowerPoint. I do this simply because I love color and the visual effects. There's also a book entitled, "The Real Estate Business Plan" for agents to follow and use as a great guide!

To add to this, I've also had the pleasure to begin my CRS coursework. I am convinced what makes CRS members so successful is their dedication to implement the skills, techniques, and knowledge learned in these classes! Thanks for always blogging and never giving up. You do make a difference Leigh!
