Target--Goal Setting. Brendan Winans

Goals

We all claim to have 'em. But how many of us actually do? I'm not talking about some broad aspiration like "I want to be wealthy" or "I want to be a professional ______". I'm talking about specific goals, BIG & small, set somewhere in the forefront of your mind. Statistically only 5% of people actually set goals. And you wonder why 10% of the population controls 90% of the money....

Why I set Goals:

Personally, I am not a linear thinker. I need to have a picture, big or small, of my objective. My desk is littered with yellow note pad papers with little "To do" lists for the day, it's just how I get things done. But this is not something I only do for the short term. Long term goals are hugely important. How else are you to know what you are striving for. I would go mad if I was working as hard as I do, but I didn't know what for!

Goals give you a target, it is something to compare to where you are at right now. They are to motivate you every day. Having a big picture makes it infinitely easier to bare the daily struggles of life.

How to Set goals:

Some people will tell you to start small... I say "SCREW THAT" start huge! Yet try to stay realistic, nothing is more discouraging than a goal you can never accomplish. Here is my method.

  • What do you want to accomplish professionally in the next 12 months?
  • What do you want to accomplish in the next 6 months?
  • What do you want to accomplish in the next 3 months?
  • What do you want to accomplish in the next month?
  • Anything sooner than 1 month qualifies for your "To do" list.
So obviously your biggest goal(s) is going to be the one set to be completed in the next 12 months. Go big with this one, don't hold back, but try to be realistic. For
example, if you are in Real Estate, what would you like to earn as a Gross Commission in the next 12 months. Or better yet, approach it in a different way (eg. I will earn a six figure pay check in the next 12 months). This is where most people stop (if they even made it this far to begin with). From here you need to break it down to what it will take. Ok so you want a six figure paycheck, you need to find out what the price of the home is that will earn you that. If you are in Colorado like me, you need to either list a $3.125M home, or sell (buyer side) a $3.572M home.

Now, you may be thinking that is a good place to stop, detailed enough right? NOPE! From there you must break it down more. Statistically, how much advertising would it take to get that and so forth...

This must be the recipe for all of your goals, big and small.

As for your small goals, make lots of them! You will find yourself feeling very accomplished and motivated as you reach your small goals. It is a good feeling so why not try and feel it more often? They will motivate you even more, and in turn, make your larger goals easier to accomplish!

Be sure that your small goals line up with your big ones, you don't want to be counter productive simply to achieve your small goals.

In summary, goals are your fuel. They will give you the drive and energy to achieve the big picture of "YOU".

Brendan Winans
