As necessary, but at least once a week I am going to post this and place it in the ActiveRain channel under the topic 'network news' to keep you updated on what's going on around ActiveRain. I know, I know.....where the #$% was this a week ago? The apology comes later.....read on.

We did a major infrastrucure upgrade last week. As a result of that upgrade we have experienced a rash of issues. In order to alleviate some of those issues we had to make some quick decisions to triage the groups area of the site, as it was responsible for the majority of the proxy errors.

Proxy Errors

As you can see from the graph below (sshhh, don't tell Jorgen, I shared his super secret proxy error graph.....he's on a plane home to Kansas for Christmas right now so maybe I can sneak it by him. Don't worry, he'll be working the entire time he's on vacation) proxy errors are almost non-existent.

ActiveRain Proxy Error Graph

Groups

Groups were the major cause of the proxy errors that were abound last week and early this week. Some of the groups have gotten so big that our existing infrastructure for groups was no longer sufficient to support the amount of content contained in them. We made some temporary changes to groups in order to stop the proxy errors and give the developers enough time to fix the infrastructure.

  • Right now, Groups are only showing four pages and are arranged by 'last comment'. That is being fixed and on Friday morning when you wake up Groups will be back to being arranged in chronological order and you will be able to see much deeper into the archives.
  • Member lists in groups are still accessible, but the button has moved. To access member lists you now click on the hyper-link for the group member count. If your group has 300 people in it, the 300 will be a link you can click to access member lists. Currently you can not administrate member roles but that will be fixed Friday morning as well.

Posting to Localism

Posts are not currently feeding to Localism. This fix will be in place Friday morning. Posts that you have posted in the last week that are tagged to syndicate to Localism will feed over there retroactively once the fix is in place.

Posting to Outside Blogs

Posts are not currently feeding to your outside blog. This fix will be in place (take a guess......) Friday morning (man, I can't slide anything past you, can I?). Posts that you posted in the last week that were tagged to syndicate to your outside blog should retroactively feed once the fix is in place.

Tags on the sidebar of your blog

Right now, if you go to the tags dropdown of your blog, it's possible that you will see someone else's tags show up. In fact, you will see the same tags in the dropdown menu on every blog you go to. If you see your own tags on your blog, go to my blog.....you will see your tags on my blog as well. We call this the 'ActiveRain soulmate bug'. The person who's tags are following you is your ActiveRain soulmate and we expect that you will get to know them well and maybe make a new friend.

Any guessers for when this will be fixed? Yes......you in the back with your hand raised.......BINGO!! Friday morning.

The Apology I was talking about

I want to express a very sincere "sorry" to everyone. This last week has been a little bit tough. Our internal communication broke down and we weren't able to relay this information to you in a timely manner. Please know that the frustration that you encounter is multiplied by 1000 for every member of our team. That's not to discount your frustration because you should be able to count on ActiveRain to function properly. It's just saying that we work tirelessly to provide a product of which we can be proud and when we hit a patch like the last week our utmost concern is getting the platform stabilized so that you can utilize it. (Someone just informed me that my goatee has gray hair in it.......and I'm 100% sure it wasn't there prior to the last week)

I've never come out and asked anyone to subscribe to my blog (I just figured everyone took one look at my Shakespearian prose and immediately subscribed, hahahaha) but moving forward this will be where you can get updated consistently, so take a minute to hit that little subscribe button on the right. (Brad will attest to my HTML skills and if I was to try to pull that subscribe button in here I would be here for the next hour)

If you would like to know what I'm up to, follow me. But don't be offended if I say something colorful. I'm human!

Friends, followers, and connections are the way of the future.

I use my tags quite often, so I found my soulmate quite quickly, too. I purposefully didn't tell anyone because I knew the AR Powers-that-Be probably already knew about it.

I take it you're the one who has sent all this rain down my way? It's been raining non-stop since midnight, -- extremely rare for San Diego -- and the mountain passes are closed because of snow.

I even had to go work in the rain this morning instead of Playing in the Rain. The latter is much more fun -- LOL.

You're welcome for keeping your members updated in the meantime. We'll continue to do so even with your weekly post to allow members to post any further concerns that your team may have missed. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery from all the recent downtime and may we all get back to blogging as normal sooner than later. Keep up the good work Bob. We do appreciate it but we definetely would like to get updated more often so we don't all think we're going into the cuckoo's nest. Btw: what happened to the programmer from china? We don't see him on the about us page anymore.

Oh and before we forget, there are a few things that you didn't adress above that we outlined in the following post: New Changes on Active Rain? UPDATED 12/16/08!

To quickly summarize one: Issues with "New members on active rain"'s  myblog button's not working, and a few others. Hopefully those can get fixed by friday as well. Also can you adress the edit buttons not being there for all comment posts anymore and only the latest. Is that a bug or a fix that we should know about.

Bob, not sure if this is a glitch of suppose to be this way...........but..........the comments are now coming up in my google alerts. Like if I or some agent in Ann Arbor comments on a post, I get an alert on it. I go to the blog and the post is nothing about Ann Arbor, but.........if I or another agent in Ann Arbor made a comment it gets sent out in a google alert.

Is this a change, a mistake or what?

Did you know?

It has been happening all week and I sent it to some MI agents to show them. Of course I follow so many Google Alerts but they are getting picked up.

Bob- Thanks for the explanation.  You didn't address one issue (that I know of ;-))  I'm the #1 (featured) agent, in Westport, CT, but when you go to that location, I'm not shown as one of the "Real Estate Professionals" (right hand column.) Would someone please put me back.

BTW, I'm already subscribed to you, Brad, Rich, Jonathan, Matt, Jorgen, Mike and Claire.  I figured among those blogs, I would always have a clue as to the latest glitch inovation in the rain.

Bob...

Yikes .... I think the preference of asbout 90% of the group members s to have the posta ordered by "Last Comment!" We want to know which posts are getting the activity, not which are the newest.

I think this is essential for the survival of the group as a forum, and not simply a list!

Cherimie,

Glad my shameless plug worked ;-)

Russel,

"I even had to go work in the rain this morning....." You aren't going to get me to shed a tear on that one, haha.

Christine,

All i asked for from Santa was a 'proxy error free' Christmas, so let's see how good I have been this year.......

Castellum,

Thanks. Yi is no longer with us.

Judy,

hmmm, a Shakespearian pose....you may be on to something. Maybe my next profile pic will have a huge collar in it like they used to wear back then.

Kristin,

I'm like the Wal-Mart super store of ActiveRain news.

Craig,

Pain is a good word to describe it :-)

Missy,

It's a change.....but not on our end. It appears to be something Google is doing. Our comments have always been able to be indexed by Google. All we have ever done is put 'no follow' tags on any links inserted in a comment. (in an effort to deter spammers). Recently Google has started diving deeper into each page it is indexing on ActiveRain. They are certainly up to something. My Google alerts for 'ActiveRain' and 'Active Rain' are blowing up over the last four or five days. I'm getting 10 times as many as I was prior. It hasn't had a significant impact on traffic on the site yet, but we're keeping a very close eye on it.

I'll steal this line from Rich Jacobson that was passed around in an internal email between us: "The day any of us can (fully) explain, yet alone understand how and what Google does is the day we should be in contract negotiations with MS or Yahoo!"

John,

If you were assigned my tags, then yes, it was a secret santa idea :-)

Meredith,

glad I could help.

Linda,

Everything should be straightened out by Friday morning.

Cindy,

I picked up a few from that :-). The points not updating may be in the next release although we are shooting to have it in this one.

Dena,

Wouldn't that have to happen. I got them around the same exact time as I was trying to let Kelan log in to post a wordless wednesday post.

I have sent in message also about not being listed as an agent under localism, and I'm the #1 agent in Apex, just as Marilyn has said! I would love to be listed as an agent in the most important section that CLIENTS can read!. To be not even listed, much less put in as #1 after all the work we've done is a little upsetting. Thanks for working on it guys!

4:01pm • #20

Jo,

Me too :-)

Marilyn,

That is happening across the network. It looks like the first and second place person in each city is not showing up. I'll amend the post once I get confirmation from the developers of whether or not that will be in this fix. If nothing else, we will get to read about it in the next installment of network news.

Bruce,

as long as that envelope with the cash shows up by next week, you will be proxy error free in 2009 ;-)

Richard,

Hmmmm......we got a ton of feedback (mostly from Group moderators) that they wanted it arranged chronologically so they could see new posts in an effort to be able to select featured posts. It used to default to 'most recent post', then you could sort by 'most recent comment'. We will have the sorting feature back in place soon, but for Thursday nights release, it's going to be 'most recent post' with the ability to sort based on other choices soon to follow.

Tom,

Looks like the old finger crossing trick worked!

Please thank the AR tech team for their hard work.  I am looking forward to even more and better changes in the AR layout, design, and structure.  Although it is good, it is not anywhere near the high professional level I would expect, such as linked in.  But I'm in AR for the long haul, I know it will be done in the future!

It looks like our tech team was able to push through a build tonight that fixed many of the errors.  You will also notice that they temporarily took down the "online now" tracker; it was causing the site to slow down.  You should expect it to return soon.

Thanks, frankly folks may be frustrated at times but this is an evolving community and we are all hopefully growing together. I must also mention we get this incredible community and resource for free so it baffles me when people get angry (yes I have even posted a rant or two but I am always grateful and just wanted to say so!)

Bob yes I guess I did mean the city pages. I was confused because when you go there from AR there is the localism logo.

Bob, I noticed we also lost the ablility to edit our comments.. I so happy this is fixed. I am the typo queen~

And I have heard from several who hate the new look of the group posts page!  Could you go back to the old design? Please please~

Thanks for the updates BOB!

I am wondering if I will have the ability to add paragraphs when I respond to my own posts soon.  Well I do add paragraphs but then they go :poof: when I submit the comment.  I am not sure if this is my problem or if others have it too.

I tried scrolling through comments here to see if you answered this question but the page is being funky.

I suspect then that the issues with correct points issues are also part of the problem, right? I know I know, Friday.

Changes seem to be coming fast and furious. Is there a plan or are the changes ad hoc?

Bob,  Are you  still having problems getting the posts to feed to Localism?  A post I did a couple of days ago and one more today have not shown up on Localism yet.  Thanks for all you do for AR.

I am glad to find out that you all know about the issues and are working on it. I thought I was doing something and retried a million times to post to Localism. I guess not knowing that there was an issue to be dealt with was the hard part.  And sorry to say Friday has come and gone, since your post!  So keep at it and I am sure it will get fixed soon.  Thanks for letting us know all the issues and the plan for the repair.

One of the reasons I've been drawn to AR is the community.  Keep up the good work.

I am curious as to when the items I posted to Localism after Dec. 17th will show up on the site. So far I do not see them. I would appreciate an update. Thank you so much and have a Happy New Year.

Did you all know that the tags drop down menu doesn't work properly in Firefox?  I sent this error to support many weeks ago, along with screen shots.  Basically, only a partial list of tags shows up in firefox; there is no scroll bar to see the rest of them.  Essentially, my readers using firefox are only seeing my first 20 tags or so.

Is this going to be fixed soon?

Bob, we all knew something was going on! We gripe but we also appreciate you! You see, if you had not become so important to us it would be no big deal. Maybe you should designate a 9-1-1 alert person that will post when problems look like they will take awhile to fix...then you won't be bombarded with "fixit" posts...let me know and I will be happy to do it for you. One phone call to me and I will alert the AR world.

One of the fixes you didn't mention is the viewing availability of all our members stats! These stats have grown very important to all of us that are on the path to improve. Will they be coming back? I want all my customers and clients to see the effort that is being placed into this wonderful place.

It is a good sales tool for us all. So, please don't forget the stats! And, thank you for all you do! Kelan's pic is just adorable...looks a lot like daddy without the goatee! Love it.

PS. I've subscribed to you all along. Everyone should. ;-)

Until I read Karen's comment about Firefox I never stopped to consider that my issues may have more to do with my editing in my personal browser preference Google Chrome than glitches in Active Rain.  I am relatively new to AR, but am very appreciative to folks like you that stay on top of all this.  Thanks for your efforts, if/when I catch on, look for my blog to rock.  Hopefully I can pass it on like the established AR community has done for me.
