Earlier today I was talking on the phone to various former colleagues, a friend and even a client that I hadn't spoken to in awhile. They all work in different industries...real estate, mortgages, radio, TV, music, finance, law, transportation and automotive.

Some of the conversations were just me on the phone with them one-on-one, and others were 3-way chats where we were "shooting the breeze" for nearly an hour.

There was one resounding theme I noticed, and that was a sense of uncertainty about what the future may bring.

  • One person had been instrumental in the growth of a major TV broadcasting company for nearly a decade, and suddenly she received her pink slip.

  • Another person had worked their way up at a big record label in the music industry, devoting their life to the company, only to be given 2 weeks of severance pay and a half-hearted "good luck."

  • The third person is a promising young trader on Wall Street who sees his future crumbling, but feels lost and doesn't know what to do. He's so depressed and unhappy with the job he used to love that he says he can't even get out of bed in the morning to go to work.

  • The fourth had been promised to be made a partner in her law firm, only to find out that someone else less qualified was chosen.

  • The fifth is a 10+ year veteran car salesperson. She sells luxury vehicles and is phenomenal at her job. The dealership owner told all the sales people (including the "top producers") that they'd have to take a $50,000 pay cut, yet the next week he flew overseas on his private plane with his family for the next 2.5 weeks.

  • The sixth is a Realtor who had to make a tough decision to leave his current brokerage for a different brand who truly sees his value, respects his hard work and is willing to pay him accordingly.

  • Another is a mortgage consultant who can't seem to get himself out of a slump and drum up new business. Instead of "networking" he said he finds himself "chasing Realtors like a personal injury lawyer chases ambulances"...his exact words.

  • The final convo I had (literally in the midst of writing this post) was with a client of mine who works in transportation. He drives a bus, and it's taking a toll on his health (physically & mentally). He's stuck between a rock & a hard place, because they're cutting back on hours and he just bought his family their first home.

While they all work in different professions, they shared the commonality of not being sure of what is "next."

Change is good and necessary, but it isn't always pretty or comfortable. In fact, change can be pretty uncomfortable.

When we stop changing, we stop growing. Don't ever fear change!

For anyone out there who feels uncertain about their future, remmber you've got a BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF YOU!

Here's my advice to you...

  1. Believe in yourself, even when others don't.
  2. If you're going to have to "roll the dice," bet on YOU.
  3. Know your worth, your value and don't accept anything less.
  4. Nothing is promised, so always have a "Plan B, C and D."
  5. Remember, "sometimes you've got to go to grow."

Stay motivated,

Amber

Amber - The music industry one rings pretty true with me.  I've worked with great long-term record company employees only to find on the next promo cycle that they were all gone.  In the UK, they replaced almost the entire label...from the top to the bottom.  I didn't know anyone in a matter of a few months away from them.  It can be brutal and the half-hearted "good luck" is all too common in the industry.  You're right though, a little change can bring great things, but it sure can be uncomfortable.  The easiest way I've found to deal with it is to tell myself not to think about until the change is over...then I usually look back and think "wow, that was a great move."

Good advice, this is a hard time for many people.  I know personally I'm working more hours just to get by and I also realize now is a good time to recalibrate and get some new things ready for launch.

Another great post.  In fact, I'm forwarding to a few friends who are a little down on their luck.

Your 5 pieces of advice are priceless.  Thank you!

Amber,  thank you for sharing your friends' challenges and experiences with the rest of us.  You did an excellent job of describing their struggles. I hope each of them overcome their difficulties soon and are blessed with an abundance of good times and wealth.  Also, thanks so much for including your advice at the end of your blog.  I agree with you wholeheartedly: "Believe in yourself, even when others don't."

THanks Tony Robbins!  Change can be a wonderful thing. People get so scared of it. But soooo much could be waiting for them.

Great post!  I am new to the business, only in about a year now. I just joined Active Rain, and love all the support it brings.  I work for Weichert (MN), and I love it.  It is challenging, and I love the motivation you generate in your post. I love the positive attitude during what can sometimes be considered hard times. Stay Positive!   Anne:)

First of all, you sure do talk to a lot of people in one day!  But I do believe that that charming personality of yours is a people magnet.  The sad side of that story is to talk to eight people and they are ALL down on their luck.  I love your 5.  I hope that you sent them to all of these people who need to hear this.  But then again they were talking to you personally so I guess they got inspired!

Why do I feel like I should book some time on your couch?

Amber, one advantage of believing in yourself and betting on yourself is it is something you can control. We have way too high expectations of what companies and jobs do for us. We have to do for ourselves as well. Build a better YOU! Quite a diverse set of friends. That indicates you are well rounded. Very good.

Matt: The music industry resonates with me as well, because I've spent 16+ years working in it, and still have close ties to it to this day. There are many parallels.

Brian: "Recalibrate"...what a great word to describe what we all should probably be doing.

Cameron: You said a mouthful!

Joanna: Hope it helps. :)

Tracy: Thank you.

Steve & Cristy:  Great motto! I only wish more people actually had a "plan." :(

Steve K: Tony Robbins...Yep...I taught him everything he knows...lol! :)

Anne: Weichert is respected brand, so I think you made a good choice. Thanks for stopping by.

Tony: Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and bookmarking.

Debbie: What can I say...I like to talk...lol! :) Actually, those convos were long-overdue, because we kept missing each other for one reason or another.

Gary: My professional background outside of real estate is pretty diverse, so my "circle" somewhat reflects that. You nailed it when you said..."one advantage of believing in yourself and betting on yourself is it is something you can control. We have way too high expectations of what companies and jobs do for us. We have to do for ourselves as well."

Teri: I'm sure there is positive news waiting on the other side for them.

Dorie: You are so right!

This is a great post for someone looking to develop a winning 2009 attitude.

I pledge to...

1. Don't accept anything less that my value as a real estate professional.

2. Develop a Plan B. (This is truly one of my weaknesses.)

3. Always keep growing!

Congrats on being selected for The Blogger's Choice Award!

This is a great post!  You hit the nail square on the head.  Change is genuinely frightening, it is however the gateway to the next phase in your path-

Life is a journey most people fail to remember that.

It may not lead you to where you thought yur were going, but rather to a place you never knew existed.

It can all be good as long as you give each step nothing less than your very best!

Always move forward.

Happy Holidays!

Life. Today you are rich and you are out of a job tonight. Like you said in life, you need a Plan A,B,C and D. But we should never be afraid of change. We should approach change as a challenge for us to grow. Thanks for sharing this. Great post.

It all sounds nice...but what kind of plan BC&D...???!!!......RE is 24/7....there is no plan B...not you're self supporting...this isn't a business you can stop and start...then its a hobby....Obviously I'm struggling now....I keep thinking about getting a partime job....but anything that takes you away from RE....cuts into opportunities.....I dont know anyone whos gotten a part time job and has been able to continue and grow their business.....Dont' get me wrong..I'm a huge believer in staying positive and having faith and belief in yourself....and thats why I'm still hanging in......But here I sit..doing all the right things...calls, emails, mail, follow up, open houses, etc.....and all I have right now are 2  very small settlement ( that were both supposed to happen 4 weeks ago) and 1 investor who has lowered his numbers because of the economy.....We can be as positive as we like...but the negativity on news keeps the buyers and sellers backing away....SOOO whats my plan B???

Amber, I am sorry to here about your friends discouragements but it sounds as if they are getting some great advice from a good friend. My son and I had a similar discussion a few months back and all though not in the exact words I assured him that America will recover because that is what we do. He like all of us just need to believe in ourselves and in each other knowing that we will. Thanks for sharing.

There are hard days in everything.  If you've lived a day, you've discovered that.  It's so great to hear passion and the love. It sounds so corny, but I am SO grateful to be a Realtor.  I really love it.  I was in education, both secondary and post-secondary.  I was very unhappy. I really love this business.  Even now--it is so good even when it's not great.  On the hard days, we can encourage each other, and sometimes just listen and not have to say a word.

Thanks for posting.  This pic is for you and my friend Denise.  Soon, we're gonna be so busy, we'll be running around with our hair on fire!Is your hair on fire????

You have to adjust to change quickly and also adjust those B, C, and D plans accordingly also.  Change is just God stretching us - to get us ready to hold all of the new blessings coming our way.  You cannot pour new wine into old wineskins.  View change just as that.

Fantastic ideas and thoughts!

We all seem resistant to change but it's such a blessing to be able to do so. It helps me appreciate the fact that I control my business and my success, no matter what's going on with the economy or the government. If something isn't working, I can adjust until it does!

happy new years!

Amber,

The only thing that is constant in life is change.  Thank you for writing a very inspirational post and congrats on being selected for the Blogger's Choice Award!   No one knows what the future holds and you provided some great advice to best handle the uncertainty.   No matter how bad things may seem, we got to think positive.  I try to stick to the 3 L's: Live, Love and Laugh.  To finish, I would like to share a joke.   We all have been told and know that at the end, everything is going to be OK.   Since, from what we hear (including the stories you shared in this post), everything is not OK, that means it is not the end.

Amber,

I love this.  I will say I don't develop a plan B, C, and D because then I setup that my plan A is ridden with holes and is going to fail.  I would say, if anything, my plan B, C, and D is my willingness to adjust to change, and my willingness to change when others are stuck.

Amber,

This is a great comment by you, "Know your worth, your value and don't accept anything less"

I think that is really the common denominator in life.

It separates those that achieve greatness and those who settle for less.

Awesome post.  Believe in yourself even when others don't.  That is inner strength.  I see having a Plan B, C and D is just being open to making adjustments so that Plan A succeeds.  When people get down they have given in to listening to the "negative noise" around them.  One has to change the channel and listen to the positive, because it's out there.  Kudos to you, Amber, for giving a positive voice for others!

I like what you said about change. No matter what kind of change it is, it is usually uncomfortable. When you change you are leaving behind something that was once comfortable to you. So keep that in mind when you ask or encourage someone to change something about themselves. But change is the only constant and you must always be ready for it.
