Located approximately 25 miles south-west of Portland, Newberg is a city covering 13.0 km, and has a population of 18,000 residents.

Although conveniently situated near the many assets of the Portland metropolitan area, the community retains a distinct physical separation from the metro origin, being encompassed by a greenbelt of rural forests, vineyards and farmlands.

The Chehalem Mountains surrounding the community and the broad Willamette River create a natural bowl, providing a special feeling of the place, greatly appreciated by the Newberg community.

Before Oregon became a state, Indian tribes and bands lived throughout the Willamette Valley including within the Newberg area. The Kalapuyas, a tribe of gatherers and hunters were the main Indian Americans that lived in the Willamette Valley. They were semi-nomadic, living on the prairies in the summers and on the forest edges in the winters. Not much is known about them, as their population rapidly declined after the settlers arrived.

Located approximately 7 miles south-east of Newberg, Champoeg was the first place inhabited by the Hudson Bay Company trappers, and became the first European settlement. In fact, Champoeg was the site where Oregon's provisional government was established in 1843. Pioneers quickly found the Newberg area as an opportunity to settle, and began clearing the land for farming.

Nowadays, Newberg is home to over 20,000 people, and enjoys a diverse economic base. Encompassed by rustic scenery, the city's strategic location offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. The urbane pleasures of Portland are only a few miles away, and countless rivers and forests are within easy driving distance, offering boating, fishing, and hunting opportunities.

Several golf courses are available throughout the county, and excellent wine tasting is available throughout Yamhill County, which has the reputation of being the Napa Valley of Oregon. A one-hour drive east will take the visitor to the Cascade Mountains for skiing, camping or hiking, and a one-hour drive west will lead to the Pacific coastline with its many lovely beaches.

With an elevation of just 175 feet above the sea level and a relatively close location to the Pacific Ocean, Newberg has a very moderate climate. The average high temperature in Newberg is 65 degrees Fahrenheit -16 degrees Celsius and the average low temperature is 39 degrees Fahrenheit - 7 degrees Celsius. The annual average rainfall is 42 inches.

Although a fast growing community, Newberg has managed to keep the peace and quiet that complements the friendly people who live there.

The Chehalem Park and Recreation District offers lots of recreational opportunities and facilities. Swimming, team and individual sports, crafts, arts, drama, dance, music, clubs, tours, self-enrichment, fitness programs, camps and special events are just a few of the individual and family activities that are available in Newberg.

Facilities are to be found within 11 parks that are located in and around Newberg and Dundee. They include playgrounds, tennis courts, softball fields, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, walking paths, nature trails, covered picnic areas, soccer fields, and public restrooms, volleyball courts, meeting rooms, kitchens, pool tables, table tennis, video games and more. There are many activities offered year round.

Newberg is a community where its citizens are rightfully proud of their heritage and its future.
