Why are Harpswell's Taxes so low???

By
Real Estate Agent with The Swan Agency Sothebys International Realty

Harpswell is one of the first rural coastal communities you encounter coming up the I95 courier to Maine.  Coastal communities to the south and immediate east of Portland have become prohibitively expensive and their taxes have followed as they have set up expensive support infrastructures.

In contrast, Harpswell with over 220 miles of shoreline has managed to maintain it's rural character.  There is very little commercial activity aside from a very active fishing industry.  The support infrastructure consists of a small administrative group of employees backed up by a large volunteer and part time staff of residents.  Our taxes have stayed at slightly above $6 per $1000 assessed valuation; one of the lowest in Maine.

Yours truly is the road commissioner which will certainly fill in the gap created in the real estate market this winter.  I get a lot of satisfaction from serving the community in this way and and added plus is that I meet many new people in town who may become potential clients.

Come to Harpswell and I'll show you around.
