I subscribe to press releases and recall notices from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and you can, too. The CPSC is the entity responsible for notifying us of all the lead paint problems on toys from China and other safety and health concerns.
A press release came in two days ago from the CPSC, about three weeks late in my opinion, but useful nontheless. It's titled Do's and Don'ts of Holiday Decorating. Here's a sample:
Flickering candles, blinking holiday lights and fragrant evergrees are beautiful stapes of the holiday season, but when used improperly, these holiday decorating "must haves" can pose deadly dangers. Each year, during the 60 days surrounding the winter holiday season, about 11,000 people are treated in hospital emergency rooms due to decoration-related injuries with falls, cuts, shocks and burns topping the list.
The National Fire Protection Association estimates that each year an average of 240 fires involving dried-out Christmas trees result in 16 deaths and $13 million in property damage. An average of 13,000 candle-related fires are estimated by CPSC staff to occur annually, resulting in 170 deaths.
You can get a free brochure with holiday decorating and toy safety tips at http://www.cpsc.gov/spscpub/pubs/611.pdf. I was having trouble downloading it this morning, but I was successful once and it is there. I notified the CPSC about the problem.
The CPSC encourages people to use its material, and there are probably thousands of publications that you can use throughout the year. As stated on the CPSC FAQ page, CPSC publications are free, and you may reproduce them, use them, or use portions of them without permission since the CPSC purposefully puts them in the public domain to get wide distribution. Visit the CPSC to see what they have to offer.
This can be Guerrilla Marketing at its finest in that it requires only your time to find materials that you can use in your marketing.
