Did you know that Union County is home of Georgia's Highest Mountain??? Brasstown Bald is 4,784 feet above sea level with panoramic views of four states! It houses a museum and exhibit, picnic areas, a bookstore and walking trails. The views are absolutely stunning! http://fs.fed.us/conf/rec/brb_overview.htm
Vogel State, Georgia's oiginal state park, was built in 1927 and is located just 11 miles south of downtown Blairsville at the base of Blood Mountain in the middle of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Camping Life Magazine listed the park as one of the top 25 public US campgrounds in 2000. The park is built around Lake Trahlyta and offers swimming, paddle boats, fishing, cottages, hiking, camping and pavilions. http://www.gastateparks.org/info/vogel
The Appalachian Trail gives hikers an opportunity to view the Chattahoochee National Forest up close, with elevations up to 4,000 fett. The trail is easily accessible at several locations throughout Union County. Side trails take you to lesser known paths such as Duncan Ridge and the Benton McKaye Trail (where a suspension bridge provides breathtaking views). http://www.appalachiantrail.org
