You show up at your client's location, only to find that he/she does not have appropriate photo identification.  What to do?  Should you go ahead and perform the notarization anyway, figuring no one will be the wiser?  Absolutely not.  This is a job for credible identifying witnesses.

All you need are two people who personally know the signer and are not parties to the document(s).  They must appear before you with their own appropriate photo ID, and must be able to truthfully answer "yes" to the questions you ask them under oath (see the California Notary Handbook for a list of the specific questions).

Now you can proceed with the notarization.

Familiarize yourself with this process, and voila!  No ID, no problem.
