Clutter Control in the Kitchen

Your kitchen is likely one of the most used rooms in your house. That is why it should also be the least cluttered. Luckily, thanks to the multitude of caddies, racks and shelving options, it is also one of the simplest to organize. Here are some helpful hints:

  • Don't double up. Have you ever bought a new blender for a party only to find that you already had one in the back of the cabinet? It's easy to buy extras of items that you rarely use, but do you really need two blenders? Begin organizing your kitchen by making a list of what you have, then get rid of anything you have duplicates of or don't use regularly.
  • Everything in its place. Now that you've pared down your clutter you can determine the best place to store each item. Place items that you don't often use on upper shelves and utensils that are used everyday within easy reach.
  • Common sense compartmentalizing. When organizing your kitchen, try to think of how you use items while cooking. Keep utensils in a drawer, rack or decorative jar near the stove where you will use them. Keep dishcloths, paper towels and sponges near the sink; and put aluminum foil, storage bags and plastic wrap together. If you don't have to think about where each item is kept or stop to search for your favorite spatula, your kitchen chores will get done much quicker.
