Hi Sue. Hopefully most of us "greenies" wouldnt have much of that stuff in our homes, to dispose of.  I took a coffee can and cut a hole in the lid and use that to collect old batteries.  Several times a year we can take all our hazmat stuff to a special drop off site.  Also, our waste collection company collects all colors of paint, mixes them into nice colors then has them available for free.  If you have an empty can of paint, just let it dry completey and you can put it in the regular trash.  I noticed that Lowes is selling a Glidden paint that has low emissions.  Not quite green but better.  We have a green hardward store here that sells "milk paint".  Totally non toxic and environmentally friendly.

Terry, if you put saran wrap on top of the paint can, close the lid tight and store it upside down it will stay fresh longer. Give the rest for someone else to use. And only buy the amount of paint you NEED.

Thank you for contributing all of your helpful tips Terry. You're right, hopefully no one has this much toxic waste at home :<

thanks for stopping by Monika. I had a seller who asked me if it was ok to leave some of these items for the next homeowner to use...no, please don't! The buyer won't be happy during the walk-thru prior to closing.

Hi Sue == as usually very important information.  It is good to have the resources handy -- I often get calls from past clients and now I know where to direct them.   Actually, with regard to leaveing paint etc.  buyer DO like to have some of those items left behind.  I leave it to the buyer to indicate to the seller if they want the paint left.  With regard to metals, old tires etc.  the lenders don't like those either!

Hi Sue!

While reading through your lists, I didn't realize just how many hazardous items the normal household contains!  Good call on proper disposal and you have definitely raised the collective consciousness of this group! :)

Joan, I read on the NES site linked above that if sellers leave household hazardous waste behind without the buyer's approval, they could get hit with a disposal fee. No idea what THAT would cost, but I wouldn't want to find out the hard way either!!

Val, wood polish and moth balls, never thought of those before.

Moth balls cause potential buyers to run away from the smell, so they are hazardous for sellers, for sure :>)
