Mel Fisher, American's greatest treasure hunter -- whose name was synonymous with Key West -- died at home at the age of 76.

 

50 years ago

Sheriff John M. Spottswood was reappointed as a member of the Florida Sheriff's Bureau. The bureau coordinated law enforcement activities throughout the state.

 

Mrs. Harold C. Campbell was installed as president of the women of the First Presbyterian Church.

 

The Key West Havana ferry announced that the ship would sail from Key West on Tuesday and Friday until the end of January.

 

100 years ago

The railroad loaded 14,000 barrels of cement on barges and shipped them to camps on Pigeon Key and Summerland Key.
