Milwaukeee Is The City That Make Beer Famous

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker

Beer. It has stood the test of time. It has been a staple for just about every major celebration and every indoor and outdoor spectacular. It has a home at Football games, baseball games, weddings, funerals, and the list just builds and builds. Why shouldn't it? Beer has been an American, for that matter, a World institution for just about as long as this guy can remember.

It gets us through good times, hard times, slow times, fast times, productive times, peace times, war times, celebrations, and more!

Beer has it's place in this World and it made one City absolutely famous.

For the record what made Milwaukee famous sure made a goof out of me more than once!!!!! I hear that Rod Stewart song once in a while "What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me

Then I hear the older version, and the original song written by Glenn Sutton and sang by Jerry Lee Lewis in 1968. I bet we could listen just about to anyone that has a story about their beer days. I for one did some things that I sure as heck am not too proud of. I also had some pretty great times

Famous Beer drinker Homer Simpson                           World Famous Miller Brewery, Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee Wisconsin has become known as the Beer capital of the World.  A visit to Milwaukee would require a visit to one of it's breweries. An absolutely mind boggling experience. Miller brewery brews about a half a million barrels of beer a day. That is a lot of beer! It also has a World class tour of it's brewery and finishes with beer drinking, and beer drinking. When making a day of brewery tours always make sure to have a designated driver. It would only seem that one would get tipsy. Tipsy, How about hammered. Imagine the poor Designated driver!

All things aside, Milwaukee has a magnificent and deep history in beer, and it's beer barons. Why Milwaukee?

Pabst, Schlitz,Blatz,Miller,Old Milwaukee, and plenty more decided that Milwaukee was the place to be!

Milwaukee did not enjoy any significant advantages as concerned the price or availability of raw materials such as hops and barley. Labor was not noticeably cheaper in Milwaukee than most other brewing cities. Milwaukee's water supply did not offer any special advantages for brewing. The nineteenth century myth that Milwaukee water produced a superior brew was debunked by early chemists. There were no particular advantages associated with transportation of freight in or out of Milwaukee. Although cooperage (barrels, vats, casks, etc.) was inexpensive in Milwaukee due to the large Wisconsin lumber trade, the savings were not significant enough to provide a major advantage. Milwaukee brewers consumed so many barrels that they were often forced to buy them from suppliers outside Wisconsin, thus incurring transportation costs. In fact, frequent barrel shortages in Milwaukee finally compelled Pabst and Schlitz breweries to join forces to establish the Delta Cooperage Company to secure a constant supply of barrels. Cheap, abundant ice from lake Michigan certainly favored brewery before the advent of artificial refrigeration. Ice also stimulated long distance shipping of beer, since rail cars needed to be packed with enormous amounts of ice to prevent spoilage of the beer. All Great Lakes cities including Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, also enjoyed the same advantages. So, Milwaukee's ice supply can not alone be credited with the city's brewing growth.

What was it that made Milwaukee the brewing capital of the World?

A combination. At the time Milwaukee's population, and outlying areas, was still relatively small. Milwaukee breweries thoughts transformed into "national minded" Once begun, the strategy of long distance shipping did not cease until Milwaukee beer was being sold in every corner of America. The proximity to large beer consuming chicago, and cheap Lake Michigan transportation, was a plus. With the great Chicago fire of 1871 Milwaukee beer sales skyrocketed.Schlitz's frequent shipments to the devastated city earned the slogan "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous." Schlitz alone enjoyed a 100% jump right after the fire.No one will ever debate the fact that MIlwaukee's brewers were extraorinarily talented businessmen. Aggressive and with a vision. Industrialists that worked hard and had sound business sense.

The fact is that Milwaukee carved a notch in History with an American passion and pleasure.
