According to today's Post & Courier, an "informal" meeting was held by our elected officials (which whom I will name) Wednesday behind closed doors to discuss a possible new road across Johns Island. All those who attended the meeting do not live on Johns Island and I feel that they do not have the best interest at heart for the rural island.
The meeting was called by Mayor Joe Riley (I have and will never vote for him) and included the mayors of Rockville, Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island, 2 Charleston Council members and other community representatives.
Most residents, including Maria and myself, are upset that we were not made aware of this meeting. By law an "informal" meeting is not required to be brought to the publics attention. Which means there are a lot of "informal" meetings. Mayor Riley claims that the public will be made aware of future meetings, but I know I heard him say that on the local news just a week ago in regards to a project that effects the downtown area.
It is our job as residents of Johns Island to attend any and all meeting to ensure that our voices are heard. Many residents feel that we need to improve our current roads before we look at other options, such as a toll bridge or an express way that cuts the Island in half.
My plea today is for all Johns Island resident to please attend the meeting and have your voice heard. Lets help protect and keep our Island as rural as possible. Thanks for you time and attention, Jim Hart
Those that attended the meeting: Mayor Joe Riley, Mayor Wert (Kiawah), Mayor Frank McNulty (Seabrook), Mayor Libby Holst (Rockville) and various Council members (not named).
Here is the link to the newspaper article that was so conviently tucked away (not front page news my butt).
