29 Comments on Congress - Going Broke Selling Liquor & Women.
I think the real point is that government, regardless of political affiliations cant even successfully run the "oldest" of all businesses! Another argument for term limits in congress, get them out in 3 terms before they get stupid!
The thing I love most about liberals is how quick you are to point the finger outward not realizing (or willing to admit) the finger points right back at you. How many of these same clowns and chimps (Republicans AND Democrats) were around prior to 1999? Most of them? At least have the decency to own up to part of the responsibility for this mess. Then I'll start to take you seriously. Otherwise just keep blaming the other guys, 'your guys', Bush, whatever else you can. The problems we're in in this country today stem from people not taking resposibility for their own actions and having no sense of accountability. That's not a Republican OR Democrat problem - it's ALL of our problems. You'll take it from here? That's what's got me worried. No sense of reality.
Richard - you get it. It's not just a Republican OR Democrat issue. THEY - collexctively, can't sell booze in a whorehouse and make a living yet we're letting Pelosi & Reid build cars, run banks, sell houses. It's a horror show and liberals only want to blame everybody else for the problems.
Gene ~ Well, I think they took it from about 2006 and ever since they took over with the leadership of Harry Ried and Nancy Pelosi, we have better restaurants in Congress, but still no new drilling in the United States, the banking industry took a dive...Also under Nancy Pelosi's leadership
1. Failure to end the “Culture of Corruption.”
2. Failure to end congressional earmarks.
3. Falure to secure the border.
4. Failure to pass an extension of FISA ( Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act ) .
5. Failure to do anything on rising gas prices. In fact, in Sunny California, prices were $2.13 a gallon for unleaded before the 2006 mid-term. Until recently, the prices have rose as high as $4.70. Didn’t Hillary “Bosnia Sniper Fire” Clinton promise before the 2006 midterm election that gasoline prices would fall, if you elected a Democrat controlled Congress.
If it weren't for the Republicans fighting for our rights when Nancy and crew took a vacation, the gas prices would still be over $4.00 a gallon.
It is evident that the Democrat controlled Congress is the most unpopular congress ever.
Gene, you know we can debate the Republican/ Democrat issue forever.....but two words would clean up this whole mess: Term Limits.
I think that's something we'd both agree upon!
All the best to you and yours this holiday season.
I completely disagree with term limits. They do a few things.
1) If you are proned to be a a crook or even just unreputable you no longer have even the prospect of not getting re-elected to hinder you
2) We have tern limits now every two years for congress or six for the senate we can vote them out.
3) The problem lies with the public that vote in such small numbers
4) We as citizens should have the right to vote for whomever we want period.
5) Experience is not really a bad thing if the person we aretalking about lives in integrity, I doubt congressmen have even completely learned their way around the capitol building in their first two years.
6) We just need to spend less time on trying to impeach the president over the patriot act (just an example) and more time making sure the official with wads of cash in his freezer(another example) goes to jail for a good long time.
The title got me! Very clever....and interesting. The joke about the pigeon cracked me up!
I've gotta tell ya I'm really conflicted about term limits. I used to think they were the answer to our prayers - to get rid of bums we'd had in office forever and who had the whole process locked up. California enacted term limits in 1996 largely to get rid of a long running character we had named Willie Brown, so you can only run for 3 X 2 year assembly terms or 2 X 4 year senate terms. So now we have people run thru their term in one house and get elected to the other for a total of 14 years. We're making some changes to that too so they can serve out a longer term in one house or the other without the need for crossover.
The conflict in me comes from this very basic fact - in some ways it is even more difficult to accomplish anything. These people are elected for a finite period of time and come into office with a definite agenda. And because of the way our state is districted their agenda is usually very left leaning or very right leaning - moderates don't get elected much so there's not much common ground for them to work on. Second - there is a steep learning curve. The myriad of laws and committees is daunting - and nobody really builds any seniority. A senior member of the assembly is in his or her 2nd term - 3 or 4 years. They spend a great deal of time running for re-election and raising cash and trying to figure out which gig they can get appointed to after their term is up. Finally, because they know so little coming in and have so little time to learn, many have come to rely on lobbyists for their direction. It has created a whole new level of dependency on lobbyists and their influence has been greatly expanded in our state. Far too many new legislators spend every evening going from lobbyist party to lobbyist dinner to lobbyist entertainment every single night ferryied about in their state driven vehicle so they don't get a DUI.
So-no. I can't say categorically that term limits are the answer. I used to think so but have seen the downside as well. I wish we could just rely on the integrity of the individual but far too many get into politics for all the wrong reasons so that is out too. I don't have a magic answer but I do know that both Republicans and Democrats are about equally to blame and if you don't understand that simple fact you are part of the problem.
Gene - all very good points you make on a state level but we have people in congress who have been there longer than the average age of planet! I mean come on, these peoples ideals don't reflect the "people" anymore than Obama does with his ivy league education and Brooks Bros suits and because they have become so entrenched in power it requires a financial catastrophe like the one we had in October to unseat a sitting congressman or senator.
No doubt our system of government works better than most but this is an area that needs to be remodeled because these so called moderate Republicans and blue dog democrats who are more worried about getting reelected than doing what the people have sent to do seems like dereliction of duty to me.
Ricardo - I just saw an article yesterday where the average age of our legislature (federal) is 63+ while the average age of our citizens is 34+. Deveral of our incoming committee chairs, based on seniority, are over 70, a couple over 80. And since many of them have been sitting there for 20 or more years, there is a real disconnect from the people they 'represent'. I wish the American people would take responsibility for throwing the bums out as needed but while most people think the congressmen are bums, their own is OK so they don't vote them out. I still think term limits has unanticipated consequences but it can't be much worse than the consequences we have right now.
Greg - that is great information can you cite the article? As for consequence's, everything has consequence and term limits may not be the solution rather people demanding more of their elected officials like say morals and ethics.
Sorry Gene, I didn't do any finger pointing, well not anymore than you did. The fact is the congress was run by the republican party, until 2006. The democrats have had two years of trying to buck the system, non of which has worked. As I said, why waste time trying to get legislation passed when the veto stamp is at the ready. I'm not saying democrats are not at all complicit, I'm just saying everything that is wrong with this country is being blamed on the democratic congress, even though the bulk of the ills started when republicans had control.
Terry - and I'm not blaming everything on Democrats either. After all, it took us years to get to this point and many of those years have been under Republicans who, like our Governator in California, have sadly oost their way. Had that not happened they would not have suffered the significant defeat they did 2 years ago only to have it compounded this year. And this year I have an even greater concern that the veto stamp is not ready. Obama doesn't have the stature to stand against Pelosi & Reid and there's a very real chance some very damaging legislation will get passed. Nobody is willing to give the free market economy a chance anymore - everybody is too eager to step in and bail it out, take short cuts and tax and spend our way to prosperity. I hope the Democrats surprise me. I'm not optimistic that will happen.
Gene ~What they needed was Billie Mays hawking for them. The guy is on cable every ten minutes and he cracks me up. I can just imagine the comercials. " Call right now and get two hookers instead of one thats right we'll double the fun and we'll even through in a shot of Jagaermeister all for the special price of %99.99 but only if you call in the next ten minutes.
HI GUYS BILLY MAYS here from the government run Mustang Ranch...ever have that you know itch that can only be scratched by a public "servant" you know when standing in line at the DMV or waiting on eternal hold at the IRS just wont satisfy it?
Well come on down the Mustang Ranch where we have three girls who couldn't get jobs anywhere else in the bloated government bureaucracy and are just slightly more disgruntled than those who work in state government. Because the federal government doesn't have to return a profit to it's shareholders, I have been authorized to give two overweight and slightly disgruntled public employees for the price of one.
See - a little thinking outside the box (no pun intended) and they could have balanced the budget inside 2 years. We'd be running a surplus right now with a positive trade balance. Detroit could still be making money building big old flashy Cadillac pimp-mobiles and housing would be flourishing. But noooooo.
I'M SORRY BUT THAT WAS JUST PLAIN HILARIOUS! We all know sex sells, how could they possibly have messed that up? Spent too much time sampling the product and not enough time marketing it:)
It is great to know that our country's future is in the hand of all these nit-wits. Just makes you sleep so well at night.
Trish - I honestly hadn't though of that problem but given our elected leaders predilection for boozing it up and hiring high priced hookers, that may well have led to the demise of this great institution. (The whorehouse I mean, not Congress).
No doubt that some out there take the approach that a glam shot translates into wishful thinking on the part of prospective clients that perhaps there will be more to the "relationship" than just buying or selling a house.
