Elephant Seals - Birds & Animals of the Monterey Peninsula Series

These incredible animals can be seen at the Elephant Seal Rookery on the Big Sur Coast about 8 miles North of San Simeon.

The rookery has a population of about 8,000. The mating season (and the best time to see them) is from December to April.

Another good place to see them is at Ano Nuevo, North of Monterey.

Male elephant seals

These big males can weigh 2 1/2 tons and be from 14 to 16 ft. long. They are protected so you can't get too close. (Or maybe we are protected!)

What great pictures.  I love seals.  They're one of my favorite things to see along the coast up north.

I got to see hundreds of them in 1994 when I stayed at Ventana the night before my day at the Hearst Castle. The Central Califronia Coast is quite stunning.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2009.

These are great photos.  The water looks cold.
