OK, the car is pretty clean!  Not the trunk yet, but the passenger compartment is more than presentable.

So my family is coming for Christmas dinner, and my house is looking like the car did yesterday!  My cleaning crew came today, so the house is clean, but cluttered.  Really cluttered.

My style is usually to stash the clutter somewhere out of sight.  So it goes from the living room to the attic.  Or maybe the back bedroom.  I can close the door and no one will open it, except maybe my sister, Joan, who comments on many of my posts.

When we were children, we couldn't watch cartoons on Saturday mornings until our rooms passed inspection.  And there was always this dilemma - do I stuff the clutter under the bed?  When I did, my father always checked under the bed.  When there was not a single molecule of clutter or dirt under the bed, he wouldn't bother to look. And all of his children are miserable housekeepers, even when we pay someone to clean our houses for us.

I was somewhat relieved when I checked my calendar and realized that Christmas is Thursday.  I have plenty of time to stash everything - and just not in my car!

Why not invite the family over for a cleaning party? By the way, the story of you and the white house is so cool. I had no idea and some people didn't read the post and were upset with me for stealing your blog without permission.

I guess didn't get that it was a joke and I really can't time travel.

Patricia, I live by the "one garbage bag a week" theory.  (I hate clutter.  It drives me to distraction!)  Each Monday morning one trash bag goes out to the curb that isn't part of the normal family garbage.  It's clutter, or what would become clutter if I left it laying around in my house or car or garage.   If I forget one Monday I'm a mess inside.  (Oh man, hope you're not a therapist also, you'd have fun with me :-)

One garbage bag a week. That's it.  Give it a try!

Enjoy your holidays with your family :-)

Pat,

If it is that bad there is always a big shovel and the backdoor, the yard is larger than the house, right?

I have now had the pleasure of laughing twice today with your postings. Most of the house stays "relatively " clean. We have someone come every other week to assist with the process. My office at home is another matter. I never seem to find time to clean it. When I'm not busy I don't have time because I'm making phone calls and marketing to develop new business and when I'm busy I don't have time. So it never gets done.

I can barely keep my house clean , it usually requires cramming cleaning , right before people / guests come over, much like I did for tests in college

Pat:  I am a lousy housekeeper too, but will need to find time to swab everything down and stash my clutter as well.  I often wonder, if I had company more often, would my house be cleaner?

Pat,

I do not know about that. I do know that it is possible to have a dirty house and a dirty car at the same time.

Pat - Once the tree and other Christmas decorations come out there is never enough room left for all of the other things that you normally have out! Clutter is normal at this time of year! Relax!

I'm fortunate in that my wise old grandmother taught me how to keep things clean and organized. She also was famous citywide for having garage sales every six months. Her mantra was "If I haven't used it in six months, let someone else have it."

Hi Pat-My name is Sharon. I'm new to exploring Active Rain and haven't set up a profile yet but hope to in 2009. I was scanning the top 100 bloggers and came across this one of yours and the previous one about your car. I had to smile because I can totally relate. My apt and car both need major work. I can mess it quicker than a house full of kids. It is a never ending battle with myself. It is nice to see someone else has the same problem. Good luck on conquering it.  Have a warm wonderful holiday season and look forward to more of your blogs

Sharon

We tend to move things around rather than dump it.  We just finished the basement and had to stack boxes in a closet to make room for the carpet guys!  Now the closet wiil need attention because the things that we WANT to put in there won't fit.  If I had my way we would just dump the boxes - we haven't opened them in 7 years.

It takes me a good 2 hours every other week to pick up the crap in my house in order to make it a "cleanable" home for the cleaning ladies.

Patricia, I keep moving things from one room to another and I still have clutter.  I finally decided to hide it all in my casita.  Then I got the dreadful call, visitors who want to spend a few days in my casita.   YIKES!  It's god to see that I am not the only one that has this predicament.

I'm with James, I think it might be impossible for me to have both clean car and house at the same time.

I do not de-clutter either. I move stuff from one place to another on a regular basis. It makes ME feel better!
