For several years, I have driven past the courthouse square in Johnson City at Christmas time and enjoyed all the beautiful lights. This year I wanted to share them with you.
Johnson City, for those of you who do not know, is a small town in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. It is located along Highway 281, a main corridor from Canada to Mexico. Johnson City is named for President Lyndon Baines Johnson's family (click the link to learn more) and the courthouse was a place he was familiar with.
As a young man, he would meet with local residents and discuss changes that needed to be made in the Texas Hill Country. He was a real go-getter. He went to Austin to represent his local community and to bring needed changes for the nearby residents of the area.
I can't help but see him in my mind sitting on the steps discussing ways to help the farmers and ranchers of this area many years ago. The Lyndon B. Johnson ranch is nearby in Stonewall right down Highway 290 toward Fredericksburg if you'd like to visit. They have a great museum there that tells about his life.
The courthouse square is decorated every year with thousands of lights. There are horse drawn carriages if you'd like to take a ride.
As you come from the north on Highway 281, you can see the courthouse lit up for many miles. It looks like a mountain but if you travel this way in the daytime you will see the hills of Johnson City in the background. This is one of my favorite sites. When I am away from home, I get excited when I see those beautiful blue green hills of Johnson City. I know I am almost home then!
