Privacy vs. Privacy

Two new information resources pull me in different directions.

Property Shark now lets people see your mortgage info. When I take Zillow's recent evolution of allowing anyone to post comments on it's listings, I think the American homeowner's right to privacy just got shot in the back by those seeking to profit.

You have to register at PropertyShark to use the service. I did so using a throw away email address and all bogus information. Then I looked up my address. I was not a happy camper. Check it out, let me know what you think.

I can see a whole new batch of scams coming at homeowner's by con artists armed with this inrormation.

On the other hand, this post from Reggie led me to a really cool new Goole App -

Goog-411: Free Local Info - Next time you find yourself on the road and in need of local information, try Goog-411 (Google's Voice Local Search). It may be in it’s experimental stage, but I found it to be easy to use, and on target. You can try this service by dialing 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone. Oh, and it’s free!

Isnt this info all public? I think it makes sense thatnow everyone can see it and not just the banks and brokerages who have the time and money to go get it. I wish I had propertyshark when I bought my house in November- I could have run comps myself to get my own understanding on what things were selling for.

It is public record, but it is becoming more easily accessible for anyone. It would be interesting and maybe educational for you to run the comps on a property and compare them to a professional Realtor. Comparing notew on your process versus theirs might be an eye-opener for both.
