Give Us Your Money, or the Webkinz Gets It... on Christmas!

Laura Monroe tagged me for this Christmas Meme that's been going around like a mini plague.  This may not seem to necessarily follow the rules, but this is exactly what I want for Christmas.  I am tagging no one. This one dies here. Here goes:

A few years ago, the Webkinz phenomena infiltrated my little son's imagination, and he just had to have one, or two, or three.  At the time, a little stuffed animal with the ability to be taken care of and played with virtually, in addition to just being squished and held, ran one about $22.00.  For those of you that don't know, once the cute furry thing was purchased, the child had to think of a name, go to webkinz.com and put the number from the label into the computer to officially adopt this animal.  One could then engage in all sorts of virtual activities, that would all give you points with which you could "buy" furniture, toys and food for the newly adopted pet.

Having a few non-virtual adopted pets in our home, we thought while pricey, the lessons learned in ‘taking care' of these pets would be invaluable for the little munchkin, so we figured we'd comply, and in short order, our son ended up with a total of 7 Webkinz.  He has been taking care of them religiously, at times insisting he had to run home from being out at a movie or visiting friends just so his Webkinz didn't go to bed hungry.  He has one of those over-active imaginations, so the line between the virtual and the real world is a very thin one.

A few months ago, there was a river of tears cried over the fact that four out of his seven Webkinz were "retired", and that meant he got absolutely no points for taking care of them.  They were suddenly no longer invited to activities, getting treats, or whatever else it is that the newer, non-retired pets got.  I thought of writing a letter to Webkinz then, but truthfully, was just so angry at the idea of taking something away from kids that didn't cost them a penny, all in an attempt to force more of their toys down people's throats... I let it go, until today.

This morning, my son logs in to check up on his pets, and gets the following message:

From your furry friends at Webkinz World:

Your Webkinz account is set to expire on December 25th, 2008. You can avoid it by purchasing a new Webkinz before then..."

my son with his webkinz

So here I am, facing a dilemma of sorts:  break my son's heart by explaining to him that whatever is going on in the prettily colored rooms of the virtual Webkinz universe is not in the least bit real, and that none of his pets exist outside of the soft and snuggly toys he goes to bed with every night.  I could tell him that Casey, the elephant, doesn't really care for the bananas he's been feeding him, or that Jeffrey the pug doesn't care for a virtual blanket and a new easy chair.  I could tell him that it's all a bunch of zeros and ones scavenging the caverns of parental wallets in the rather cruel attempt to extract more and more money from people...

Or, I could run out and buy yet another Webkinz, before Christmas, so that my son doesn't go to bed worrying about his pets every night, and hope that the one I pick out doesn't get ‘retired' too soon.

What I really want to do though is to tell whoever is behind this whole Webkinz phenomena that they are a pack of jackasses who have found the most cruel and ingenious way of forcing their customers to remain with them for the duration of their children's childhoods.  The cost of doing otherwise would be too much to bear for most of us, parents.  So here is what I want for Christmas.  I want a Webkinz for every kid who's at risk of losing their account on Christmas, simply because their parents didn't not give this company any money in the last six months.

Casey, the elephant

I want that, and I want Webkinz to go out of business with apologies to every kid they had taken an unfair advantage of.  I want the schmucks who run this company to wake up one day, preferably on Christmas and seriously think about where they went wrong.

They had a brilliant idea. Their games and educational activities are well done.  They had a loyal following...    Instead of promoting their new releases by paying for advertising, they chose the cruel and heartless tactics of extracting more money from customers they already have, by threatening the welfare of their adopted pets.  Wasn't the whole point of Webkinz to teach kids to take care of animals?  That our pets are indeed, irreplaceable, and that each one we have throughout our lives is unique and special? ..

I know it's in really bad taste to wish harm on someone for Christmas.  But then again, I am only returning the favor.

Michelle - I have a fundamental issue with the tone you chose in your initial comment. You are entitled to your opinion, as are we all, but if you choose to come on to someone's blog with the intent of proving the poster wrong - it would help if the facts were on your side of the argument.  I am not accustomed to that being the case with you.  In the grand scheme of things, if the number of comments here seemed overboard for you, you should have written your own post on how wonderful this company is to even out the scales, if that's how you feel.

PS: I blog for many reasons - therapy is not one of them.  It's a conversation, one I try my best to keep civil and engaging.  Anytime I run across something that I think is worthwhile to talk about - I blog.  That's my way of utilizing the space I have on Active Rain.  You are under no obligation to read me, or to comment on any posts that you think are unnecessary or in some other way defective in the first place.  I find it amusing when people jump on any post only to talk about how that post shouldn't have been written or commented on in the first place.  Weird, to say the least.

Inna, I didn't know there was like a quota on how many comments a blog can get, nor did I know that there are other topics more important that we should focus on.  I also didn't know you blog for therapeutic reasons.  I thought beer was the answer to our anxieties :-)

Inna - Wow! I missed all kinds of fun here.  First, thanks for the heads up.  My children are not into webkins and I will now do everything possible to keep it that way.  Second, I find extortion neither admirable nor innovative and am truly confused by those who think otherwise.  Makers of children's toys/books/etc know that they have parents by the collective balls.  This is clearly evidenced by near predatory pricing.  However, this is a flagrant violation of basic decency.  If they are proud of their marketing strategy, let's see them be more upfront about it.

I hope that your son does not outgrow his love for webkins in the near future.  I hope that he continues to learn the responsibilities and values that attracted him to them in first place.  Sorry if this means that you have keep contributing to a poorly-run company whose short-term view will certainly become its downfall.

Happy New Year!

Terry - to each his or her own, I guess.  There is nothing wrong with blogging for therapeutic reasons:-)  I'd stick to an occasional martini and a good movie as therapy though, and keep on blogging for all the wrong reasons:-)

Erik - they really do have us by our collective balls, don't they... Thank you for a thoughtful and accurate reading of this post:-)  In all fairness to Webkinz people - the extortionist tactics certainly have a high rate of success.  Certainly higher than could be achieved through normal advertising channels...

I have the distinct feeling Shane will indeed outgrow these toys shortly, and hopefully, will learn to derive as much fun and adventure out of books...

Happy New Year to you as well, my friend.

My kids are VERY into Webkinz.  We do not pay more than $14 for one though; often I can get them for less.  We have not had any issues with the retired pets at all...no changes.  The only dilemma we've had over retired pets is if they retire and go out of stock before we get it, if it's one they desperately want.

My issues with Webkinz involve the "virtual" part - they have crazy filters set up so that some normal words can not be used because they're not allowed...like my son who got the turtle and wanted to name it Shelldon.  Well he can't, because part of the word is "hell."

Another thing that upset my daughter was in the "trading room" where you can "trade" items you have for something someone else has.  My daughter got scammed by another webkins user who offered a "rare" item to my daughter in exchange for one of HER "rare" items.  My daughter put her "rare" item on the trading table and the other user "took" it - but before taking it the user switched THEIR rare item for something common.   My daughter was devastated because she gave up a fancy lamp for a "dumb old checkers game."

Overall though, I love webkinz and it was the best thing to happen to my kids...>LOL...it's the one thing all three of them like and they play with them together OFFLINE as well as online.

We've never had issues like these you've described, Inna - and we bought our webkinz from a private boutique as well.  I'm sorry for your frustrations!!!!  And I do agree that it stinks that you have to buy more webkinz to keep your one active....

Karen - I absolutely love what they had done with the whole concept/idea of webkinz, and the fact is, they do have a loyal following.  I am appalled at these tactics to hold on to it. There should be no need for it, certainly not in that way.:-)

For now, our little one is all content and has his pets, virtual and otherwise, for another year. Next year, he might outgrow them afterall, but if not, chances are i will buy another webkinz just to ensure that the ones he had been taking care of are still accessible to him.

Glad your munchkins have something like this in common:-) Thank you, and Happy New Year!

WebkinzFamily

Hello,

Webkinz is amazing for childrens and families what you say is bullshit, having a webkinz account is helping your child, for the future. Ganz must close accounts if pets are not adopted within a year because, if they didnt delete all the accounts that werent being used anymore there would be a crash in the hard-drive with too many accounts. Ganz donated tons of money to charitys, would "schmucks" do that? Also if the pet is retired, there isn't any defect in the webkinz account. But this is now 2010 so i'm not sure if they did that in the past.

Well thanks for the bull Inna

well not trying to go against your article but you do realize that a webkinz expires after one year. So if your son activated his webkinz on christmas a year before then yes it will deactiviate unless you reactivate it.
