I got a phone call at my office today from someone who claimedto be with AT&T.  Turns out that is a lie.  She informed me that I was going to get two bills unless I told her I wanted to "stay with AT&T" after the "recent" merger with BellSouth.

I told her I was under contract and wanted my long distance plan to stay the same.  She said after recent Little mechanges that couldn't happen.  I asked her what the new rate was going to be and to explain the changes.  She got made because I was asking questions???  She yelled at  me I was going to start getting two bills and hung up on me.

I didn't fall off the turnip truck THIS morning!!    Naturally someone from a company (so I thought because she said so) that I do business with hanging up on me didn't sit well with me.  I looked up and called AT&T Business.  Turns out they didn't even call me.  Turns out that someone is trying to "steal" my long distance.

Poor things... don't they know I have a block on my account and that nothing can be changed without my secret password AND my written authorization.

I wanted to put this out there so anyone else who might receive this or a similar phone call will be aware of it.

And if you didn't know you could protect your account from slamming by placing a freeze without written authorization on your account you can do this.

So if you get one of these questionable phone calls, do not just let it slide.  They can twist your words and make it seem like you agreed.  They can ask:

"You want just one phone bill right?" and if you answer "yes" you can be walking into their little trap.  Be careful and cautions.  Even if your phone company is not the same as mine I am sure they have protection procedures in place you can use.

Tammy great advice for people to stay on the watch for these culprits. There is someone I am sure on every few calls and I guess they thought that you were one they were having next.

We recently opened our office and for a couple of months were inundated with callers claiming to be with Qwest and running a similar scam. I did as you die, and locked the account.

Hi Tammy,
Good advice, put a block on your account and go over your statement carefully every month!

I doubt anybody believes you just fell off a turnip truck, Tammy. Good for you for not falling victim to such a scheme. When our phone rings at my house, 99% of the time it's a telemarketer.  In fact, it often freaks me out because our landline so rarely rings. I'm like WTF is that? My fax machine rings more often than my home phone.

Susan- you are the sweetest!  Have a Merry Christmas.

Dinah- No problem- it actually happened in my office oh about 16 years ago and it was problem getting it changed back... took months.

Tim- Many folks don't know about locking your account.  Looks like the phone company would tell you when you get a land line.

Cynthia- Yeah- I learned that lesson the hard way.  Was charged for a couple months for web hosting... umm WHAT? before I caught it.  Fortunately after a phone call they gave me my money back.

Elizabeth- I keep threatening to get rid of my land line at home, but it's been my number for  SO long.

I don't conduct business over the phone or by email with any of my service providers for two reasons:

  • They don't conduct business by phone
  • They don't conduct business by email

If it sounds like something I might be interested in, I'll tell them that I'll call my local office and check into it and thank them for the heads up. That usually infuriates them and they hang up on me, saving me the time from having to call my local office since I then know it's a fraud.

Tammy,  I had a call just this past week with the same story except they were also going to merge my internet service into one account.  I checked with my service provider and they were not doing this type of marketing.  So watch out about any phone call.
