Recently I had lunch with a couple seniors at Nor and John's Red Barn Deli in Germantown. You might be wondering why it is called Red Barn since this building does not look like a barn. Well this establishment was located just a block away in a Red Barn but had to relocate at the end of the lease. The patrons were very upset because they thought that Nor and John would close shop. Fortunately this building on one of the four corners in town became available.
This is a very small town. I am always amused though that on three corners of the four corners in town there are three gas stations. Does this mean that people here travel a lot? I think it related more to the fact that Route 9G is a well travelled route which runs parallel to Route 9.
The day I was at the deli/diner it was packed, you see, not too many places around to catch a bite. The locals are very grateful for this place, because you can get reasonable breakfast and lunch and the food is very good.
Down the road is Palatine Manor a senior housing complex, and this deli/diner is a place the seniors like to go to. Here it is more like a family, everyone seem to know each other by name and you could tell there was genuine interest between patrons, owners and waitresses.
Today the pace is so fast we don't seem to connect with other people , even in restaurants people are distracted by text messages and cellphone calls. Here it was refreshing to see people connecting over lunch, you could really see that this was truly a caring community.
So if you are passing through Germantown, right at the main light you will see this place, stop in for a good meal and a friendly chat.
