I Am Truly Mobile Are You ?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Preferred Inc. Realtors

In an effort to be as mobile as practical I have set out on a campaign to both benefit me and my Clients. Up until this point I had a pretty good system working. I am an active Real Estate Broker affiliated with RE/MAX Preferred Inc. Realtors. The Company is located in a suburb of Portland Oregon. I am whats known as an Out-Of-Office Agent. That is I do not physically maintain an office space at my office.

It was not just a cost savings decision that caused me to be and out-of-office agent. It was because I did not see the value. Having an Office space meant that I would have to commute to get there. Hence burning up valuable time which I could put to better use than behind the wheel stuck in traffic.

But like I said I had a pretty good system working. I would generally get up in the morning, Run the Hot sheet, print out the matches and depart for the coffee shop. During the day if I was working with a client who decided to write an offer, I would jot down the information let them go off and talk about it over coffee while I went to my home office and created all of the paperwork on an On-line forms program.

Within an Hour I would be back in front of the Client with the paperwork in hand. After 20-30 minutes or so I would have gained all the signatures and made my way back to my home office to Scan and email the offer to the Listing Agent. Like I said, I had a pretty good system working.

That was until the market started to get crazy again about 5 weeks ago. Suddenly it seems as if ( thanks to my new Web_Site  a prospecting dynamo ) I have more clients that ever before. Now I am the kind of agent that likes to give all my clients personal attention and top notch service. This running around thing was starting to impede my abilities to perform.

Hence as alluded too in my post Deal_Or_No_Deal where I talk about my purchase of a new  Toshiba  Laptop Computer and my hope for its future benefits and then subsequently in the post The_New_Laptop_Pays_Off  I tell the story of my ability on virtually my first weekend out to Pay for the system. It was on that Post that Ardell   asks in her comment " How did you print the offer? "  To Which I responded " Ardell : The answer to that is in a future Post. Thanks for stepping in out of the RAIN. "

This is that Future Post. The Printer that I have is an HP_460  portable Ink Jet color Printer. I had looked hard at the Cannon IP90 but was just more familiar with HP. The HP 460 has a larger Ink capacity as well. On top of it I also had purchased a Portable Scanner called NeatReceipts_Scanalizer  Which not only allows me to scan on the fly but also has a spiffy organizer tool allowing you to define different folders for your scans including those for the Tax Man when you want to scan those ever so important receipts. Printer was less than $250 and Scanner was less than $200. Thank you Staples  for now I am truly Mobile.

Herb,

I like the way you think! Are you using a wireless card with your laptop or just hotspots? Couple of suggestions: Try a car mount for your laptop similiar to something you find in a police car (pull the MLS with your clients live onboard) and also add a GPS for your laptop (if your car doesn't already have one).

Moblilty Rocks!

The mobile office is the only way to go!  Even before good portable printers, I had my car trunk setup as a full blown office with all the bells and whistles. I had a power converter in my trunk and a wireless access point. This let me create a sort of  mobile wireless network that was connected to a printer in my trunk. I could fill out all the paperwork on my laptop with my client, click print and in my trunk, my printer would go to work spitting out the pages ready for signatures.  The printer was an old apple laserwriter with ethernet connected to the wireless accesspoint/router.

Time has moved on and better mobile solutions have come along, but the value of that portable office has always stayed the same.

Theresa : You might have something there. Perhaps you could have one of those futuristic flying cars like on th Jetsons cartoon show with a real estate sticker on the side as a group symbol.

Welcome to the freedom of mobile real estate! I love it and am trying to get the other agents in my office on the bandwagon. Next on my list is going paperless or at least minimizing paperwork.

Chris : Thanks for the read. Minimizing paperwork has always been my goal. I am cognisant of the fact that the Oregon Real Estate Agency though always wants a Paper Trail. But that of course does not mean that it has to be in Quintuplet form.

Thanks for the post... this is the way we live now... and being in this industry even if you have an office  you need to be "mobile" to a certain extent.   You use all the new technology well.

I am more than ready to get out of the broker's office space.  I just remembered that my new car, Pontiac Vibe has an outlet so I can plug any equipement into.  How cool is that...

I have always worked well at home (I was a professional wife for 15 years) and find my time is more productive when I am not involved in the office drama and eavesdropping.  My co-worker talked me into getting an office at the brokers place.  Well that has backfired and I am ready to let go  of my desk fee.  For the amount I pay, I can afford some cool gagets.  I am conservative so I'll buy only what I need as I need it.

D,

The Office is the biggest hype of all. Business has always been done on the street. The Office is the place to turn in paperwork and recieve your checks.
