One of the most important lessons that I have learned in life is to communicate. It has gotten me into some trouble at times, because I'm the kind of person who doesn't mince words. I will say exactly what is on my mind. But communicating has also gotten me out of a lot of trouble too.
I got a call this afternoon to do a closing at a mortgage company. The closing was scheduled for 4:45 p.m.. When I called the mortgage company, I was asked if I could do it at 5:30 instead because they needed more time to get the documents ready. It wasn't a problem with me. I assumed the borrower had been notified, but I wanted to call her anyway to introduce myself.
I couldn't reach her the first time I called because she was at work. All I had was her home phone number. When I finally got through to her it was 4:45. I called to introduce myself and to confirm the new time with her. She said that she was told to be there at 5 p.m. I told her that there was a misunderstanding, and that the closing was rescheduled for 5:30. Moreover, I wouldn't be there until that time.
It's a good thing I called her because she would have been waiting there for a half an hour until I showed up. As it turned out, we both arrived at the same time.
My instinct told me to persist in trying to reach the borrower. But what I really have to thank for everything going smoothly was that lesson I learned early in life ...
... communicate.
