Is Your Well Water Safe? Time for a Check Up

Well Water Wise Week, May 7th through 11th, is coming up fast in Ham Lake, MN. All homeowners in Ham Lake get their water supply from a private well since there is no public water and sewer system in the city. Here is an easy way to find out whether your well is producing water that is safe for your family to drink.

It is recommended that all homeowners have the quality of their water tested annually. As a Realtor working in the Ham Lake and Forest Lake areas, I know that most people only test their water when they buy or sell their home. Make a commitment to do this every year to verify your water supply is safe for your family.

The City of Ham Lake makes water testing easy.  Test kits are available at the city hall. Pick up your kit and fill up the sample. Then drop off the sample on M-TH between 8:00AM and 4:30PM (or Friday before noon) at the Environmental Services Unit in Room 360 of the Anoka County Government Center located at 2100 3rd Ave., Anoka. The kit is free but processing the water is $30. Each sample is tested and you will receive a report with the current levels of coliform bacteria, nitrogen and other contaminants.

Teri - we too have to test at the sale and the city does not offer the testing but we do have a couple of labs that do.  There are several other tests you can have done but the 2 most important are mentioned here.

Thesa--Getting the word out to test more often than at time of sale is key. You are right...you can test for many different minerals and toxins but then the cost of the testing is quite a bit more. Lead is commonly tested for in MN and for FHA loans.

I know that there are a lot of sod farms in Ham Lake, and that the uppermost aquifer is epecially prone to contamination in this area.  Does anyone know if pesticides have shown up in the well water here?  Thanks!

Angie--That is a great question, but I don't have the answer. The MN Department of Health tracks well construction and I believe a water test is done for each new well. I would think that if information is tracked, that is where to start. However, the required testing for well water is not for pesticides but for coliform bacteria, nitrogen and sometimes lead. Few homeowners do pay for additional pesticide testing. Since each well is private, it would be up to each homeowner to request and pay for such testing...There might be additional testing for public buildings like schools.

Teri, once again GREAT information.  I had mine tested already as we had a well scare in the next town over.
