Black Hawk Down - or Red Tailed Hawk

My neighbor was out in her yard on Christmas Day exclaiming there is an eagle in her front garden.  I thought, eagle, in Franklin, Tennessee?  Now here in Carriage Park we have some interesting wildlife and especially water fowl.  The pond behind Carnton Plantation and Confederate Cemetery  (Battle of Franklin) is in my back yard and we have more than enough wild life, perhaps you have read about out beavers,  but there is more than enough geese, occasional heron, and some large white birds that I never got close enough to identify.

But an eagle?  We actually got within 10 feet of this bird and for 20 minutes to a half hour, it didn't budge.  My Nighbor's front porch was covered in feathers and the bird appeared to be hurt but eventually took a few hops and flew into nearby trees and disappeared.

I am not an expert, but my guess is it is a hawk.  Any Audubon(ers) out there want to venture a guess.  Hawks in Middle Tennessee yes, eagles, hmmm, I don't think so.

Mike - I don't believe that this is an eagle, however, I've seen a Bald Eagle less than 1 mile from your home. I have a picture of it.

It looks like a hawk to me too Larry.

Hi Mike... it definitely looks like a hawk to me.  Of course there are different varieties of hawk and I have no idea what variety it might be... but he doesn't look happy!

Mike - I'm a birder (not a major expert), but it's definitely a hawk.  I know that red-tailed hawks are common across the country.  I might double check my birding book on this but my guess is that it's a dark morphed red tail hawk.  When it flew away, did you get a good look at the back of it's tail?  If it flashed brownish/reddish, it's definitely a red tail.

Jessica - I am afraid I didn't get a good look, but my son-in-law agrees with you.  It is a hawk, he suggested red tailed, because they are not uncommon here (I guess).  He just left 10 minuted earlier with his new 10 mega-pixel camera and fancy telephoto lens too.  He just got his degree in all that stuff so I respect his opinion in all things nature.

Thanks for stopping by.

Beautiful looking bird you found there. I just wouldn't get too close to him though.
