This Is An OLD Maidenhair Fern!

By

I have always loved plants......I'm sure I get that from my Grandmother, who we called Ditty.  Her yard was always gorgeous.  She had lots of azaleas and hydrangeas, but she loved ferns too.  She had ferns that she kept on her porch when the weather was warm and would bring them indoors each year when it got too cold.  There's no telling how long those ferns lived.

Ditty had one maidenhair fern that I remember from when I was a very little girl that was strictly an indoor plant.  She was very particular about that one, and we didn't dare touch it.  It was huge!

That fern had been given to her by a relative, and it wasn't long before it turned brown and died, or so she thought.  She threw it outside behind some of the azalea bushes that surrounded the house, and noticed weeks later that it had come back to life.  She brought it back in and it grew into that monster-sized fern.  That was probably fifty years ago.

Eventually Ditty's health forced her to move to Birmingham and live at my parents house.  Of course the fern came too!  That was in 1997, and Ditty passed away the next year (she was 93).  The fern even survived when my parents moved into a smaller garden home.  Several years ago my Mom separated the big fern into several smaller ones and so the ferns live on.........

This is a not so great photo of one of the maidenhair ferns, but it was the best I could do Christmas Day.  Maybe when the decorations come down and the ferns return to their usual spots I can get a nicer shot.

Ann - Maidenhair ferns have alway had a place in my heart since childhood.  When my mother passed away in 1975, I brought to my home a large terracotta container, loaded with Maidenhairs from her house. Over the years, they have flourished, and multiplied.  They are now all around my house.  And everytime I look at them, I think of Mom.

I love this story...and this was my favorite plant for years (even though I don't have a green thumb). Isn't it wonderful to have something like this LIVING on...I think I like this idea more than sourdough starter, especially since hardly anyone seems to have the time for breadmaking anymore.

Hey, Ann.

Maidenhair ferns were the favorite of my wise old grandmother, and they are my favorite small fern. Yours in the picture looks like it is suffering a little, either from warm air drafts, soil that is too dry, or water with too much salt in it, as indicated by the brown ends on many of the leaves.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2009.

It looks like if you put red on alternating flowers you could turn it into a xmas fern and not have to put it away.

I figured if there was a maidenhair fern anywhere around, Russel would find it. Indeed he did. Follow his advice. There's no one who knows plants like he does. The only bigger library section in our home is his collection of Beatles books.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life -- make it a good start.
