I have always loved plants......I'm sure I get that from my Grandmother, who we called Ditty. Her yard was always gorgeous. She had lots of azaleas and hydrangeas, but she loved ferns too. She had ferns that she kept on her porch when the weather was warm and would bring them indoors each year when it got too cold. There's no telling how long those ferns lived.
Ditty had one maidenhair fern that I remember from when I was a very little girl that was strictly an indoor plant. She was very particular about that one, and we didn't dare touch it. It was huge!
That fern had been given to her by a relative, and it wasn't long before it turned brown and died, or so she thought. She threw it outside behind some of the azalea bushes that surrounded the house, and noticed weeks later that it had come back to life. She brought it back in and it grew into that monster-sized fern. That was probably fifty years ago.
Eventually Ditty's health forced her to move to Birmingham and live at my parents house. Of course the fern came too! That was in 1997, and Ditty passed away the next year (she was 93). The fern even survived when my parents moved into a smaller garden home. Several years ago my Mom separated the big fern into several smaller ones and so the ferns live on.........
This is a not so great photo of one of the maidenhair ferns, but it was the best I could do Christmas Day. Maybe when the decorations come down and the ferns return to their usual spots I can get a nicer shot.
