La Canada is getting ready for January 1st. Sponsoring one of the few self-built, community volunteer and community funded floats for the annual Rose Parade is a tradition!
Each year the community has a "contest" for the float design. The winning design is built by volunteers. There are fundraisers throughout the year to pay for the float.
As members of the community, it's quite exciting to watch the float being built (it's situated at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Hampton Road, under the 210 Freeway bridge). You can go day or night and see volunteers working on the float. On New Year's Day, we watch the parade on television, anxiously awaiting the La Canada Flintridge Tournament of Roses float, hoping that it has a banner in front of it's arrival to announce that it has won an award.
This year's float is titled "Mechanical Melodies", and it's quite a feast for the eyes! Very colorful, with a lot of mechanical activity going on. These last days are cruitial to the float's finishing touches ... the flowers. You can see photographs online of the float's progress here: LCF float photos
The official website of the La Canada Flintridge Tournament of Roses is here: LCF Tournament of Roses. An historical list of the prior year's floats is here: LCF Tournament of Roses historical floats
Good luck La Cañada! We'll be watching on January 1st!
