Cannon is located in the Fanconia Notch State Park. It is unique in the fact that the State of New Hampshire still owns and operates it (so far). There has been legislation and attempts to lease the recreation area to a private firm to run the ski operation. So far the efforts have failed. The State land is also surrounded by White Mountain National Forest, so there is virtually no private development in view of the slopes. Cannon is the oldest ski area in the country, and remains very much an unspoiled wilderness. Many local skiers love the mountain for it's no frills rustic charm, or the fact that it is harsh and formidable so many fair weather novices stay away. What ever the reason the mountain offers steep, tough terrain and wicked winds. So if you are a whiner this mountain is not for you. If you wish to try your hand at old style skiing get on Interstate 93 and stay on it until the mountains get tall dark and scary..then you'll know you have arrived. The area offers a Aeriel-Tram for fast top to bottom maximum runs and a modest cafeteria, if you are looking for a sunning deck and cracked crab keep going pass this exit.

Same photos: Looks much scarier in the winter doesn't it? Believe me it is, just driving through the Notch can be frightening on the wrong day. Have fun Skiing everyone, nervous Try the Bunny Slopes somewhere else.

Being a whiner, that mountain is not for me!  Not even the bunny slope!  Great photo from your listing though!

Steve.. Great pictures.  I remember your blog on the 114 acrea you have for sale.  I'd love to ski this, but the knees are what they used to be.  I think it was all the mogul skiing when I was younger that I'm now paying the price for.

Do me a favor?  Ski a run for me.  Thanks.

Hi Steve, my kids learned to ski at Cannon when we lived above the notch (where I grew up). I myself never skiied the mountain until they they shamed me into it and took me there one day after their afterschool lessons. I got used to it after a while but it certainly scares the daylights out of you the first time you get to the top of Avalanche and look down! Its amazing what no fear does---we should apply it to real estate. Good luck to you in 2009!
