That
question is probably something that you don't normally ask yourself
when you own a business. But in the age of technology and computers
this is something to seriously consider. According
to this story a
man in Winnipeg had $52,000 added to his bill after a hacker(s)
gained control of his voice mail. While this seems out of the norm it
actually seems very easy to do and it doesn't look like most phone
systems have any sort of prevention for this sort of thing. With only
a 4 digit code protecting you how safe can you be?
I
would definitely read the article and if you or your business has a
similar phone system I would check into this. The ironic part is this
guy's business is networking and security. This may or may not be
something new but it is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Even though this is one more thing to be aware of on top of many others. You raise a really good point with this post. Just another reason why I like Active Rain.
I do not understand why the company would do remote transfer. This is certainly a security loop. But it is nice to know. We are in the process of setting up a new company phone system. This comes in handy. We will take all necessary precautions.
It seems to me the logical conclusion if they got in using the 4 digit code that we need to change that to a much longer password just like we would use with any other password. I wonder if you could "war dial" a phone system and brute force it by just going through each possible 4 digit code. Is that 4^10 ? Thats really not that many possibilities.
Thanks for the info. Why can't people just be honest? I hate hearing new ways of how people can make life difficult for others, but it is useful to have the information.
It would be a big pain if someone messed around with your voicemail but a very dire situation if they rang up $52,000 in charges. Not to mention as the article points out that this was most likely used in a criminal situation in order to have untraceable numbers.

Certainly something I haven't thought about.
