Can someone please tell me why?

I am working on a post, actually it's a Social Media Glossary that I've been researching using Creative Commons Blogging is not new!materials from around the web.  I'm at the SPELL CHECK Stage and guess what the blog software does not recognize certain words.

Here they are:

  1. Bloggers
  2. Blogosphere
  3. Trackback
  4. RSS
  5. Podcasts
  6. aggregator
  7. Flickr
  8. Weblogs
  9. HyperText
  10. CSS
  11. IM
  12. Skype
  13. Username
  14. MicroBlogging
  15. Moblogs
  16. MyBlogLog
  17. FeedDemon
  18. NetNewsWire
  19. Wikipedia
  20. Permalink
  21. Photosharing
  22. Wikis
  23. PDA

Blogging is not new, so why hasn't someone told the spell checker?

Well, some of us do speak a 'different' language! Sort of like talking to a teenager, have you done that lately?

How nice of you to put together a glossary. I'm sure it will be helpful to many.

ROTFL.....one thing nice about most spell-checkers ... at least their "trainable".  You've got a great list started, Krystal, to help that learning curve!!

Thanks for the Post Kristal. Spell checker is essential.

There must be a software program available to plug these words into so they are recognized.

Thank you for the post.

Kristal -

I was thinking the same thing, but just hit "ignore all" when those words came, without mentioning them to anyone.

Perhaps, in their 2009 edition . . .

Happy New Year!

Krystal:  I am going to guess that all of those words are missed by spell-check because they are not words that have been "recognized" as words, and then accepted by the current edition of the Miriam/Webster dictionary.  It makes sense to me.  I wonder if that is the reason ?

4:35pm • #7

I think that is funny. Activerain spellchecker does not recognize Activerain.

Many of those are acronyms or proper nouns and rarely have any spell checker ever picked those up. There is also a huge difference between Word and OO Write if you use both of those.

lol, I have noticed that too.  AR should add your list to the spell check somehow.

Laughing at Sean and AR spellcheck.

Actually, until the last year or so, I didn't recognize any of those words either.  Of course, it is not my job :)

KK,

It's all about the anxiety of posting it fast without thinking the spelling is wrong. Too much emphasis on the content instead of double checking the spelling. The spell chek is broken now anyway:)

Kristal - most programs allow you to ADD words, so that when these appear you can add them, and they'll be recognized the next time around.

Kristal,

Some of those words like "Flickr" don't follow normal spelling rules, but "blog" does. AR still flags blog and blogging as misspelled. :)

Well, I was just going to say what Steve H just did. I've often wondered why AR doesn't go in and add the key blogging words to the spell checker here.

LOL...how true. Poor spell check...I keep helping it add words but there always seem to be more to add.

I just add the words and once it is added it is not a problem when you post a lot of those words. Actually, you make a good point wonder why the techy's haven't added those words?

KK - do you remember how it was when it first was set up here? Took forever for it to start recognizing BLOG and MLS, among some other obvious ones.  Looking forward to the glossary.

Dena ~ LOL you are so right!  Actually most of the "young" people in my family are under 5.  Basically they don't respond well either.

Colleen ~ Glad to hear a Glossary is needed.  I'm actually doing it for another site, but I will let everyone here know.

Steven ~ I so agree.

Tony ~ There just might be. I hadn't thought of that!

Dean ~ Ignore all works good too.

Karen ~ OK, Webster is dead! How can we blame it on him?  :) just kidding...

Sean ~ Yes, that is pretty funny.

Shane ~ My post was done on WordPress.  I think their spellchecker is as bad as Active Rain's.

Patricia ~ I somehow doubt that spell checking on the top of their minds!

Virginia ~ No worries, many of these words didn't exist a few years ago.

Neal ~ I never use the AR spell checker, it doesn't work with Firefox, or at least didn't the last time I tried it.  My lament is about the WordPress spell checker. That's what I was working on.

Sharon ~ Good point, I think WordPress must have the "free" version, no frills.  I'll have to confirm that to be sure.

Steve ~ Yes, you would think a blog spell checker would recognize itself! :)

Elaine ~ I have no idea!  I wonder how difficult or easy it might be?  Should we send the gods a memo?

Missy ~ Sorry I didn't mention in the post I was working on the WordPress Platform, not AR.

Jeff ~ Yes, I remember.  Actually it was a long time before we even had a spellchecker!  Guess a broken one is better than none at all?

You know that most software spellcheck allows you to correct a word or 'add to dictionary' and we have no feature like that.

I'm never paying too much attention to mispelled words when reading a blog...I know people are in a hurry.

Kristal I wish that spellchecker would get up to web 2.0 as well.  My spellchecker always want to make the word internet with a capital "I" but I don't think it is a proper noun.

5:49am • #42
185,258 Points 27 Featured Posts Outside Blog

Kristal - I've commented on this before somewhere - it drives me nuts that the various forms of "blog" are not accepted.  I can understand it not accepting words like "Flickr" as it is a company name (although as a test I just checked "Kleenex" and it is considered to be spelled correctly), not a word, but words like "blog" should definitely be covered.  Nannette mentioned the capital "I" in internet as well - that one gets me too.

6:11am • #43

Even more frustrating is continually telling spellcheck to learn new words, and doing it over & over as it doesn't appear to learn anything.

I wonder what is happening to the lexicon sometimes, but change is inevitable.  Did you create the collage?  Very cool!
