New Years ResolutionsAs we are fast approaching the New Year and a time for New Beginnings in 2009,  it is also time to start preparing our

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!

Everyone has their own resolutions to make based on their personal situations and what seems to be important to them at this particular time in their lives.  The following are some of the most popular resolutions from the past.

To Lose Weight

To Get Out of Debt

To Save Money

To Get A Better Job

To Exercise More

To Eat More Healthy Food

To Go Back to School

To Stop Drinking

To Quit Smoking

New Years Resolutions

Ahhhh to MAKE the Resolutions is the EASY part!

The challenge is in KEEPING them!

If you truly want to fulfill your Resolution you must

  1. Be committed.  Whatever you are trying to achieve should have a plan.  Set your goals, make your plan and commit yourself to the end result.  It all begins with YOU.
  2. Don't give up.  If you have a minor setback, don't give up. So you ate a cookie, that's OK, just don't eat the whole bag.  One cigarette?  NOT the end of the world, but NOT another one.  Couldn't make it to the gym, fine GO tomorrow.  But do not give up!
  3. Stay Motivated.  Write down your goals, share them with close friends, ask for support, give yourself rewards.  Do whatever you can to keep a positive attitude toward your success.  You CAN succeed!

And remember that there are all kinds of Resolutions that you can make.  They don't have to be limited to the typical ones that are most often made, they can be most anything that might make you feel better about yourself, about who you are and who you want to be.  And of course it is nice to be rewarded with good comments and pats on the back from the people around you, but the true reward comes from within.  That wonderful proud feeling you have when you accomplish your goals!

There is nothing more fulfilling than to be able to say "I did it!"  I made my resolutions, set my goals, committed myself to a plan, kept myself motivated and I was successful!

Have you made your New Years Resolutions?  What will you change about yourself this year?

Debbie: I really like your idea about "being committed."  I have been considering committing myself to whatever asylum that would take me.  I think I've got to be crazy after going through a year like the one I just finished.  Thanks for helping me re-focus on that idea.  Take care... :)

I try and choose one very important resolution and make that one happen. Sometimes they are big sometimes small. But when I make them I commit.

Debbie,

I never start anything on New Years Day.....I quit smoking on December 3, 2006.  If I make a resolution, I make it when I decide and don't wait until January 1.  When I quit smoking, I quit.......never again did a light a cigarette.

Debbie, I think you make a good point about not beating yourself up if you slip up.  Just keep trying and don't give up.

Karen - I am with you girlfriend!  Let me know when you find a nice one....hmmmm.....maybe one with a nice pool overlooking the ocean and a nice spa for massages....and it must have only the finest in dining!  Maybe we should approach a Developer to actually construct this place exclusively for Realtors!  I guarantee we could fill it up!  In the meantime....pamper yourself with a resolution that will make you feel better and I promise this year will be better than the last!

Laura - ONE is plenty!  The focus is on committing and being successful.  Good for you!

Julie - That is wonderful!  I did the same thing...I quit smoking in October 2007 and am so HAPPY to not have to do it anymore!  I am FREE!  I think for some the thought process may begin on New Years as we project our goals for the coming year.  The PLAN may include waiting for the right time when everything is cohesive to make the plan work.

Ann - It really works!  When I quit smoking I did not give up just because I cheated.  I trudged on to the Victory of Success!  Now if I can only succeed with losing the extra pounds I packed on with that victory!  :-) I think I can, I hope I can, I KNOW I can!

Just getting motivated to do something is difficult......with the new year quickly approaching I am feeling the pressure to identify what I need to change (the list is long) I need a little kick in my butt.....

Debbie:  I enjoyed reading your post and not to mention viewing the really cool pictures that you decided to include in your blog.  You provided some great advice.  I agree with you about writing your resolutions down on paper.  I think it's easier to stick to something if we commit the resolution to ink and paper.  It's kind of like drawing up a written contract with yourself.

Thanks Debbie for the reminder! Only 3 more days to go... if I want to have them all written out before the 1st of January 2009!  The graphics you used add a lot. Great post!

I think it is also really important to put them in writing. This can be on your PC, your palm or blackberry, index cards, a single sheet or multiples, a notebook, your planner... whatever and where ever you will see them often and refer to and review them. I enjoy having the ability to check them off of a list, versus delete them. Emotionally, it just feels GOOD!

Debbie, you are right on with your three points. If you do not have all three, you can not succeed.

Konnie - Yep it coming faster every minute!  "My foot - Your butt - KICK" Now get busy!

Tracy - Yes I always love a little visual!  You are right....write them down and keep them everywhere...calendar, daytimer, mirror, fridge, in the car....anywhere you think you might need a reminder.

Pat - I LOVE lists too.  It is a mental weight lifter to write things down!

Danny - Just three!  Simple and easy!

I've never been one to make new year's resolutions because I think it's procrastination at its worst. Each minute is the start of a new day, a new week, a new month, and a new year. Why wait until a number changes on a calendar that someone created many centuries ago to start improving one's life? Start now! Right now!

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity.

I find one of the best things to help keep your resolution is to share it with others, help make yourself accountable to others for that resolution. If know one knows what your resolution, the only one you are breaking it with is yourself.

You can go to the gym, but if you stop who knows. If you go to the gym with a buddy and stop, he will call you and ask where you are!

Hi Deb!  Excellent advice--we always tend to bite off more than we can chew for those resolutions and then feel overwhelmed!  Staying motivated and focused is imperative to accomplishing those goals and resolutions!  Happy New Year!
