A man getting an early start on New Year's stole a $40 bottle of Moet champagne from a Duval Street convenience store but did not go far, as he was sitting across the street drinking it when police arrived.

The U.S. Public Health Service reported that 45.8 percent of all deaths in Monroe County were caused by diseases of the cardiovascular system, the leading cause of death nationwide. The county was lower than the national average of 53 percent.
