Idaho remained one of the nation's fastest growing states in 2008, but the recession slowed that growth dramatically, according to statistics recently released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The agency estimates the state's population grew 1.85 percent between mid-2007 and mid-2008, the sixth-fastest rate among the states but the slowest growth rate for Idaho since 2002 in the aftermath of the last national recession.

The top five fast-growing states were, in order, Utah (2.53 percent), Arizona (2.31), Texas (2.03), North Carolina (2.0) and Colorado (2.0).

"While Idaho's economy has slowed dramatically, it started from one of the strongest bases of any state and the situation, while serious to the people in Idaho, is comparatively better than it is in places like the Midwest, Upper Midwest and the West Coast," said Bob Fick, spokesman for the Idaho Department of Labor. "Whether that continues remains to be seen."

Idaho's population is still going strong, despite the economy.

Well, my family added to Idaho's population this year by 3.  Which is the same number that we contributed to a reduction in Colorado's population.  Never fun to be starting over, no matter how spectacular your surroundings.  Thanks for being my friend!

Hi Christina and Janna!! First, Christina, I appreciate the information, and it's great to see our States on the list! I loved our visit to Idaho, several years ago. My cousin lived north of you in Heron, Montana, so on our way home we drove South, through Coeur d'Alene ~ it's beautifu country.  Janna, I hope you have more fun "starting over" next year, it is always hard at first!

Wishing you both a Happy New Year!

Mary - It is beautiful here.  I've been blessed, my parents moved here when I was 1yo and although I've moved away for college and then for a few years for career pursuits, I'm back.  It is simply one of the most beautiful places to live.

Mary - I don't remember if I ever met you while I was in Fort Collins.  I know Sandi Godbey in my KW office did a lot of business out in Red Feather Lakes area.  BEAUTIFUL!  But the lakes here in North Idaho make those in Northern Colorado look like puddles!  Happy New Year!
