Starting this summer commercial fishing boats will be missing near shore ocean waters off Cambria according to "The Cambrian" today. They will be banned from plying the waters any closer than a mile from shore, according to rules approved in mid-April by the California Fish and Game Commission.
Three Marine Protected Areas will span shoreline stretches from Arroyo de la Cruz near Piedras Blancas to a prominent point south of the former Cambria Air Force Radar Station.
The restrictions are due to go into effect within a month or two, according to Jim Webb of Cambria, a representative of the Cambria Fishing Club.
Webb said fishing-club members "are very excited about these changes. It will be more like it used to be," when fishing was so popular on the North Coast that Cambria had a couple of tackle shops and a local recreational-vehicle park was named the Rod and Reel.
Recreational fishing including party boats, but no commercial fishing, will be allowed in a protected area expected to be named San Simeon State Marine Park this summer by the California Parks and Recreation Commission. No fishing or harvesting will be allowed in two other protected areas.
