In a previous issue of our RTV eNews I had mentioned that adding a picture to your outgoing emails is a powerful way to connect with your clients. Especially if you are like me and communicate by email a large percentage of your time. People like to know that they are communicating with a ‘person' and not just a company. By including a picture in your email signature, you are turning a normally ‘anonymous' type of communication into a more personal type.

But, why not take that a step further and include connections to your social network? At the very least, you can pick up a few more blog subscribers.

I like to use MyBlogLog to generate the code that I use for my outgoing signature in Outlook 2007:

But, unfortunately, Outlook 2007 does not allow you to edit html in your signature. So, here is the solution.

•1.       Create your code in MyBlogLog for your awesome new signature

•2.       Copy and paste the code to your favorite HTML editor

•3.       Open a local browser (F12 in Dreamweaver)

•4.       Highlight and copy the signature in the browser and then paste it into the signature box in out look 2007.

•5.       Add your picture, click save and you have an awesome new signature!

Here is where to paste (again, this is Outlook 2007)

TOOLS > OPTIONS > MAIL FORMAT > SIGNATURES

And don't forget to have fun with your signature! Here are two that I have used most recently to reflect the holidays:

This is a great tip.  Emails can be so boring, it's good to spice them up a bit and make them more personal.

Cheryl, what is the difference between, WYSIWYG blogging and HTML?  I always see the two tabs in Active Rain.  Is there an advantage to using one over the other?

Kevin, WYSIWYG is exactly what it says (What You See Is What You Get), while with HTML you are working directly with the source code. For example, with WYSIWYG if I want to add an image I would click on the image icon and add the image from a URL or upload from my computer using the interface. With HTML i would write <img src="http://www.mywebsite.com/imagelocation.jpg">to make the image appear in my blog.

If I wanted to create a text link in WYSIWYG I would follow the instructions on how to use anchor text in Active Rain but in HTML i would add <a href="link_goes_here"> before the text and </a> after it.

Cheryl - Do you know of a HTML embedding or otherwise... trick for getting your e-mail content and signature pictures to show up in accounts like Yahoo hotmail etc... if you are not on the persons address book/safe lists. For example if I sent my picture signature to a yahoo account and I am not in their address book, then it just shows up as a little "x" and they have to click show images to see it. Are you familiar with any workarounds?

Hi Jason, Its not a workaround.. but just assume that they are not going to see your graphics and include text content. Some email programs also do not accept HTML at all and convert the delivered message to text only. So, you have to keep all that in mind when you design your email signature. using my email signature for example... even though I have it 'all prettied up' it would look like this with HTML disabled:

Cheryl - Almost forgot to come back and check out your response. OOPS!

That is true, it is still an effective information tool even if they are using an E-mail service that blocks the pics or HTML. I used to have a picture on my E-mail Sig but took it off because of the blockage. But you are right, it doesn't really matter because the people who have you white-listed will likely see it, and the others will still get all your contact info. And your photo and holiday hats add a personal touch that is worth it, I think. Thanks!
