A New Year, new opportunities

2008, at least the second half of it, has been a challenge.  There has been a constant stream of bad economic news--to parody that old ditty "if it weren't for bad news, there'd be no news at all"--is the current trend.  Bank failures, government bailouts, foreclosures, job losses, it gets depressing.

It would be easy to sit back, blame the economy and do nothing but complain.  Yet, there are people who are successful, even in these difficult times.  While others are sitting around bemoaning their bad luck, the self starters are looking for new opportunities, trying new things and working harder than ever.  There will be a lot who "shake out", or, "throw in the towel", but, there are others who will come through this period stronger than ever.

At the end of this week, we will begin a new year.  Several weeks from now, our government will have new leadership.  Will the new leaders be better than the old?  That remains to be seen.  However, it does not appear that there will be any quick fixes for the economy.  Some forecasts indicate that the economy in 2009 may be worse than the previous year.  Some believe a recovery could be 5 to 10 years in the making.  But, as we begin a new year, there is no reason why we shouldn't be prepared to meet this challenge head on.  Here's to 2009, whatever it bring.
