1Matthew 5:16 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

1 Corinthians 13:1 1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal

Your group has manifested love through your work and encourgement.

What on earth (feel the humor here) would possess Teens and Leaders to spend Spring Break working?

This is what some of the group had to say:

Catie Moulton: To have fellowship with kids from a different environment,

Amanda Sweeney: Building strong relatinships with youth at this church and being able to have the opportunity to serve others.

Mary Webber: To come down and spend time with the kids, form a bond & friendship, and take something back to help our own community as well.

Sarah Flanders: I watched everything that happened w/Hurricane Katrina on TV at home. As I followed everthing going on down here I wished I could help out. I'm just glad to be here, helping rebuild, and doing what needs to be done to help the people live with normal houses again.

James Moody: I heard about the devastation that took place down here and felt stirred to come and help rebuild both the city and the people. I don't want to just rebuild buildings, but also I desire to touch and encourage the people living here.

Grant Wege: My hope and prayer for the Gulf Coast has been one of transformation. Much of what was destroyed needs to not only be rebuilt but also reformed. I hoped that by investing hours of work and love there may be a positive impact on the community. perhaps someone will see the love we share and also share their love.

Chris Birch: I saw other churches come to help and heard the stories about how amazing and life changing the trip was. I needed that in my life. I can see now how people have changed through this trip. I love doing construction, but also building a relationship with other churches is amazing. I will leave Gulfport with new friends. God has blessed me so.

David Cianci: I saw a presentation from students who came down last year and said to myself "I'd like to do that". So, when the opportunity arose I was excited that I could come down and help out. I especially liked the idea of doing construction/demolition/manual labor. :-)

Thank you so much for your kind notations and thoughts.  It was an honor to be able to connect with the great people at Grace, as well as the folks already involved in the rebuild.

God bless and hope to see you again SOON!

Last year for spring break I chaperoned a group of teenagers as a mission trip out of DeSoto Youth Ministries.   We went to Pascagoula and helped do hurricane relief.  The focus of our group's work was putting a roof on a church and cleaning out the inside--doing general clean up and some sheet rock work.   My job was trying to keep our group of about 30 fed and patching their jeans.  We also got to clean and help organize the church that hosted us. The church where we were staying didn't suffer bad storm damage but many of its members had and it was serving as a staging area for relief workers so its own needs have been deprioritized.  We were able to help them get ready for a wedding in their building and prepare for some of their other ministries.  We worked hard and loved it.  We made new friends and have a very special place in our heart for Pascagoula, MS.  Last summer the churches brought up some teens to DeSoto, KS and helped paint our building for their mission trip.  What wonderful experiences.

Lea, thanks for our wonderful story and contributions of your group. I think all of us, including volunteers have Post Trauma issues. Looking back to immediate post Kat--volunteers not only shared burdens, but shouldered a lot of them. In back of my house (where there used to be Live Oaks) there is a field and a church. That field was packed with tents and trailers of volunteers by the time we returned from evacuation. Music to my ears--Power saws being used by teams of Christians helping everyone get back to their homes or any remaining possessions.

I had never in my life seen such a physical demonstration of Christian Faith and Love. What a strong testimony from all denominations!

**Remember when you evacuate to take your power saw with you, and for goodness sake, clean out the frig and leave the door open (I returned to maggots). ...It is not necessary to clean your house before evacuation, either. (I assisted a volunteer groups by cleaning tables just so I could really talke to folks. More than once--between tears and laughter, I heard, "Suzi, I cleaned my house and stocked the pantry before I left... now I have stairs going nowhere.

Strange sites: Boats in trees, houses in streets, buckled pavement.

We really did get on with our lives, flashback occurs with such little provocation, though. Fortunately, when we have "flashback" we have people like you there.
