Peter Lowe was born in Scotland circa 1550.  Around 1565 he left to study medicine completing his studies in Paris, France and by 1589 was a surgeon to the Spanish Regiment in the service of Phillip II of Spain at the siege of Paris.  In the early 1590’s he travelled to England with Alexander Dickson.While there he surveyed several harbors, sending details back to James VI in Scotland.  On his return to France he was appointed surgeon to Henry IV of France.  He settled in Glasgow around 1598 where he set up his medical practice in the west of the country.  He petitioned the King and was granted a Charter which enabled the foundation of a medical incorporation for physicians and surgeons.  The college later expanded to include dentists, making it the only institution in the British Isles...

Herbert A. Littleton was born in Mena, Arkansas back in 1930 to Paul and Maude.  The family moved to Blackhawk, South Dakota where he attended school at Spearfish, South Dakota and the East Port Orchard, Washington. He attended high school at Sturgis, South Dakota.  After graduation, he worked as an electrical appliance serviceman in Rapid City, South Dakota.He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1948, for a one-year term taking recruit training in San Diego, California.  He was assigned as a Telephoneman and Message Center Man with the Signal Battalion at Camp Pendleton.  He was discharged in 1949, however he re-enlisted in the same year.  In 1950, he moved to Nampa, Idaho working as a lineman for Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph.  When the Korean War started in 1950 he was ca...

Gustaf de Laval was born in Orsa, Sweden back in 1845.  He enrolled at the Institute of Technology in Stockholm receiving a degree in mechanical engineering in 1866.  He continued his education at Uppsala University in 1867, receiving his doctorate in 1872.  In 1886, he was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.In 1882, he introduced his concept of an impulse steam turbine.  In 187, he built a small steam turbine to demonstrate that such devices could be constructed.  In 1890, he developed a nozzle to increase the steam jet to supersonic speed.  The nozzle, now known as a de Laval nozzle can run at up to 30,000 rpm. Vernon George Waldegrave Kell was born in Great Yarmouth, England back in 1873 to Waldegrave and Georgiana.  He graduated from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, commissioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1894.  He was promoted to lieutenant in 1896.  He fought in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.  He could speak German, Italian, French and Polish.  Stationed in Tientsin on the intelligence staff, he was also the foreign correspondent of The Daily Telegraph, being promoted to captain in 1901.  In 1909, he was selected by the War Office and the Admiralty to head the newly formed Secret Service Bureau.  Working during WWI he was dealing with the Indian seditionist movement in Europe.What you may not know about Sir Vernon George Waldegrave Kell is that he was the founder and firs...

Silvestre Santana Herrera was born in Camargo, Chihuahua back in 1917.  His parents died in an influenza epidemic when he was one.  His uncle brought him to the United States when he was 18 months old.  Growing up in El Paso, Texas he worked as a farm hand before moving to Phoenix, Arizona. At the outbreak of WWII, he was drafted into the Texas National Guard.  After boot camp, he was assigned to the 142d Infantry, landing in Italy in 1944.  In March of 1945, his unit was engaged in combat in a forest near Bas-Rhin 5 miles northwest of Haguenau.  While his unit was pinned down he charged the enemy forces single-handedly firing his M1 rifle from his hip and ending the threat with a pair of grenades.  Eight enemy soldiers threw down their weapons and surrendered.  Later that same day his ...

James Caleb Jackson was born in Manlius, New York to James and Mary Ann.  He attended Chittenango Polytechnic Institute working as a farmer until 1838.  He lectured for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society where he became the society’ secretary in 1840.  Having bad health all of his life he tried taking a water cure in Cuba, New York.From that time forward he was an advocate for hydropathy. Daniel Ken was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii to Hyotaro ad Dame back in 1924.  He graduated from President William McKinley High School.  During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor he served as a medical volunteer.  He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, being promoted to sergeant within his first year of service.He served in Italy before being transferred to the Vosges Mountains region of France.  He was there during the battle to relieve the Lost Battalion.  For his actions, he received a battlefield commission to a second lieutenant, that made him the youngest officer in his regiment. during a battle near Liguria, Italy he lost his right arm.  By the end of the war he had been promoted to captain before being honorably discharged.  He was given the Medal of Honor. What you may not ...

Margaret Brown/Margaret Haskins/ Margaret Young was born in Ireland back in1828.  It is not known when she came to the United States.  She became a prominent shoplifter and pickpocket specializing in handbags.  She was arrested in Chicago, Illinois where she was sentenced to three-year imprisonment at Joliet Prison.She was released from prison in 1878, she resumed her career in St. Louis, Philadelphia and New York before being arrested again in Boston in 1883.  Found guilty, she served a six-month sentence at the Boston House of Corrections. Frank Kinney Holbrook was born in Tipton, Iowa beck in 1874.  While I don’t have any information about his parents, or upbringing of course I can always tell you the rest of the story so let’s get to it.  He attended the University of Iowa participating in the varsity athletic squad.  Playing football lettering in both football and track in 1895-96.When he returned for the 1896 season it was clear he was Iowa’s best ball carrier.  They started with season with a 32-0 win over Drake.  They played several games and one all but one.  He finished his senior year with twelve touchdowns.  After leaving Iowa he settled in California working as a blacksmith.  He died of a heart attack in 1916, he was 39.What you may not know about Frank is that.  He was the first African-American intercollegiat...

William Henry Hastie, Jr. was born in Knoxville, Tennessee back in 1904 to William Sr., and Roberta.  After graduating from high school, he attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, graduating first in class.  In 1930, he received his Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School, followed by a Doctor of Juridical Science in 1933.From 1933-1937 he served as assistant solicitor for the United States Department of the Interior.  In 1937, President Franklin D. Laurens Hammond was born in Evanston, Illinois back in 1895 to William and Louise.  When he was three his father committed suicide.  So, his mother moved to France and then to Germany for the next 11 years.  When they returned to the States in 1909 he was fluent in both languages.  In 1912, he received his first patent for a barometer that sold for one dollar.He attended Cornell University majoring in mechanical engineering.  He graduated in 1916 with honors. Sarah Maria Beach was born in Birmingham, England back in 1770 to Richard and Mary. She married Samuel in 1795. Fernando Luis Garcia Ledesma was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico receiving his primary and secondary education there before moving to San Juan. He was working for the Teas Company as a file clerk. In 1951, he joined the United States Marines Corps receiving he basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He was a member of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 5th marines, 1st marine Division. On September 5, 1952, his unit was under attack by Chinese forces at “Outpost Bruce”. He was getting hand grenades for his platoon sergeant when an enemy grenade landed near them. He was part of the settlement party that founded Wethersfield, Connecticut. His wife’s name was Elizabeth. He died in 1644, he was 52. Mary Katherine Horony-Cummings was born in Erekujvar, Austrian Empire back in 1849 to Mihaly and Katharina. In 1869, the family arrived in the United States, settling in Davenport, Iowa.
