My Virginia real estate license renewal needs to be postmarked by midnight tomorrow.  And it will be, but just barely!

I’m licensed in three jurisdictions – DC, Virginia and Maryland.  That means keeping track of three different sets of ground rules for doing business.    For DC and Maryland, there’s Professional Development Institute about 15 minutes from my house.  In one day each year, I can take care of Maryland and DC.

But Virginia is different.  The have lots of outfits offering on-line renewals, and I decided to try RealEstateExpress.com – oops!

This is an outfit that offers real estate continuing education in virtually every state that lets you renew online.  Next time, I’m going to look for Realestateturtle.com.

The 16 hours of credit took 28 hours to complete.  Now, I’m pretty bright and normally would qualify as a “fast learner”.

The 8-hour required course wasn’t too bad.  It was well-organized and took about 8 hours to finish.  They covered everything, and I thought to myself, OK, theses guys have it down!

Then I went to the electives.

Working with Diversity to Assist the Customer was the most ridiculously politically correct, pandering idiocy.  Grrrrr!

Virginia Limited Service Agency was not bad at all – straightforward and understandable.  And as I went through it, I realized that the new laws were well-drafted – regulating disclosure instead of service quality.

The Residential Offer To Purchase section took forever to finish because, oh, gee!  They taught me everything I needed to know about the Virginia Association of Realtors boilerplate – a form we don’t use in most of the Commonwealth!  Grrrrr!

Then there was Selling to the Senior Market.  And oh dear!  It seems they were talking about my demographic!  And it was also politically correct and pandering!  And it didn’t really cover anything that would help me do a better job with my Baby Boomer and older peers!   And it took forever to finish!  Grrrr!

Well, it is done!  I’ll mail my renewal, a check and the certificates off in the morning, and for my next renewal, I’ll try to find an outfit where I can sit in a classroom .  OK!  So I’m retro!  But I think I’ll do it the old-fashioned way!

Kudos on getting through it. And hopefully you will be so busy next year that you will not have any days avaialble for the classroom and will have to find the turtle outfit again. Have a great 2009!

I love on line courses and breeze right though most of them.  The 08 purchase and sale agreement had some changes in GA and that one took a while last year.  But thankfully we don't have to mail anything anymore.  All classes are reported on line and we can renew on line.  I love it.

Ugh. Well at least it's done. I generally like on-line courses although I have taken a few I hated. Guess I need to think about things - my license expires in 7 months. Knowing California, it will be a chore to figure out the process. :)

Pat - I haven't taken the online courses. I did C21 online and found it less stimulating than sitting in a class and I think I need the structure because I easily get sidetracked while online.

Patricia, I laughed when you said it is due tomorrow. I alwayd do that and I thought I am the only one. Now I feel so good that I am not alone. I do not like paperwork but sometime we need to do it.

Hi Patricia...I like the classroom for the give and take.  Congratulations on making the deadline.

Three jurisdictions.  That just sounds like oh so much fun.  Kind of like having to keep up with the Bar and the Department of Real Estate for me.

Well if you're cranky you have lots of company.  It must be the post-Christmas blues or something but it seems to be worse this year than I remember.  I think I'd be cranky too if I was licensed for so many areas.  However, that's not likely given the distance of Hawaii from any other state!

I got some of my hours to renew in June 2008 online, but I still prefer the classrom in Herndon.  I'm ahead with my new required 8 or was it 16 required for brokers behind me for 2010.

I don't really like the online courses.  Time to start working on MD again.  I believe that's March 2010.

It's crazy that you don't just have to take one set of credits- How terribly annoying for you,

Hi Pat, sorry to hear you had such a challenging time with your online courses.  Our online school www.theceshop.com has VA CE courses online that you may want to try next time.  We worked with a top notch instructor (and great person) from NVAR to develop our VA specific courses.  If you want take any courses with us, be sure to drop me a note and I'll send you a nice discount code.  Have a terrific 2009!  Michael

I am up for renewal as well, but I love to take online courses.  They give you flexabilty and it is nice to sit in your PJ's.  I will steer clear of the site you mentioned though.  I always wait till the last minute and I can not use a site that takes forever.  Congrats on getting yours finished!
