Every year, our biggest newspaper, The Miami Herald, asks readers to vote on the Hottest places, things and events in South Florida and I thought I would share a couple of these.cuban coffee

BEST CAFE CUBANO - (for those of you that are non-Spanish speakers it means Cuban Coffee:  a type of espresso stirred with sugar to create an incredible froth....you need to taste it to understand it). - Versailles is located at 3555 SW 8th Street in Miami - I often stop by this place to have my fix of "cafe Cubano" and must tell you is not so much the coffee but the atmosphere of the older gentlemen in their guayaberas and their great Panama Hats.

BEST SEAFOOD- Joe's Stone Crab is located at 11 Washington Avenue in Miami Beach (this was a "duh" for me - I've been inviting TLW and Bryant for months to come join us at Joe's).

MojitoBEST MOJITOMojito's is located in the Dolphin at 11401 NW 12th Street in Miami (I will have to go verify this one personally because Rick makes a Killer Mojito).

BEST RESTAURANT WITH A VIEW - Houston's Miami is located at 17355 Biscayne Blvd.in North Miami Beach. (this place does have a great view and a really great walkway along the water - read the link to see a review I wrote a while back).

BEST MARLINS PLAYER - Miguel Cabrera (I had to include this one because Miguel was born in Venezuela, like me).  He is the third baseman.

BEST DOLPHIN PLAYER - Jason Taylor (I don't usually follow pro-football, but will watch the game just to see this guy.)

BEST CLUB FOR DANCE MUSIC - Club Space is located at 34 NE 11th Street in Miami (I don't do the dance scene any longer, you will have to let me know if this one's a real winner).

BEST SOFLA FESTIVAL - Coconut Grove Arts Festival is held each year in Coconut Grove in February.  This is a Joe's Stone Crabsgreat local event and would encourage everyone to go, the atmosphere can not be duplicated.

BEST ART GALLERY - Britto Central (I love Britto and everything he stands for, I was really glad to see him in the Hot List).

BEST PLACE FOR A DATE AND BEST CELEBRITY SIGHTING SPOT - Lincoln Road in Miami Beach (anyone coming to visit Miami Beach cannot miss Lincoln Road - you can go at night in the day, on the weekend...it is always a happening place.)

BEST SPA - Doral Resort and Spa is located at 4400 NW 87th Avenue in Doral.  <sigh> (that's all I can say....it's an amazing place to get pampered.)

BEST LOCAL SHOPPING DESTINATION - Aventura Mall is located at 19501 Biscayne Blvd. in Aventura. (this is my shopping grounds....so move over).

So there you have them...some of Miami HOTTEST, directly from THE HOT LIST!

Somehow I trust YOUR hotlist more than the newspapers - when they do that here there are lots of large popular places that win over small excellent places.

Now I didn't know you were from Venezuela (obviously I didn't read thoroughly). We exchanged homes there for a month many years ago - stayed in Caracas with the house, two cars, and a cook/maid; used their country club (or was it a polo club?) membership and their beach club membership. Drove to a German colony not too far away, and also along the coast so we could go to Margarita.

Spent a lot of time researching my Veillard House past - knew you'd ask about the architect so I pre-empted the question.

What is Mojito? What is a Sofla Festival? I'm feeling culturally deprived but have not heard of either of these before.

Looks like a "must keep" list for folks in Miami...

Sharon - it's all subjective, but I do recommend Rick's Mojito's.  There are many I did not include because of what you stated, big chains that won over small ones.  I am from Venezuela (from Caracas) and I can't believe you did a home exchange there!  How cool is that!  So you went to La Colonia Tovar (the German colony) - did you eat their fresh strawberries? -Margarita is such a great place also.  Now we have something else to talk about when we meet.  I'm off to check out your Veillard House post.

Mary- you are a deprived child.  A mojito is a mixed drink with mint leaves, white rum and sugar and its origin is Cuba, but it is one of the "drinks to have" - we even have mojito parties here in Miami.  Sofla is short for South Florida - you can also hear SoBe for South Beach or MiMo architecture which is Miami Modern.

Oh Monika - you missed an awesome spa!  I spent the day there recently and could not drive home because I was soooo relaxed!  Had a facial, massage, pedicure and manicure and used the sauna and steam baths <sigh again>

Beth - we do have a couple of good places for cafe minus the atmosphere.  I will call you, we manage a commercial strip center a couple of blocks away and we're there at least twice a month.

Ines - I've eaten at Joe's Stone Crab, and it was delicious for sure!  And the views were pretty darn good, too, as I recall.  Love your list - gives me some ideas for my posts.

Mary - Mojito = Palm Sugar Syrup, Mint, Lime and Rum all shaken up!

David - that was cute!

Cyndee - thanks for checking it out, and hopefully you'll see for yourself one of these days.

Sarah - oh that sounds so good - the kids can dive and we can down the mojitos - although sun and alcohol are not the best mix.

David - I still don't know where David's is - care to share?

David  (you like this post, don't you?) - Here's Rick's recipe - he muddles mint leaves with sugar and lime until it creates a minty syrup - you mix that with soda and rum...and voila! (you can also use simple syrup, but it's not the same effect as muddling the mint to release its fragrance).

Ines - well... I'm a Kentucky boy so leave out the lime and swap me some Bourbon for that Rum and I'll be happy

Oh NO no no David!!  You cannot swap the Rum for Bourbon.....that would DESTROY the mojito (as a matter of fact, you cannot even replace the white rum with dark rum....it would not be the same).  What you want is a Mint Julep.  BTW - thanks for the link, I've gone by there a million times and never stopped, will have to next time.

Porcao is awesome!  I do agree with Neal about Aventura Mall.........quite frankly, I prefer Sawgrass.  Parking always sucks at Aventura.  The only thing I like about it is the theatre, and I rarely go to movies.  Ok, Crate & Barrel is cool too.

David, what were you doing in Brasil?  I thought you were married.

Jackie - that sounds like a plan - call me when you get it and we can meet for Mojitos - where is Grillfish?

Tchaka - Are you kidding me?  I drive around for 20 minutes in Sawgrass to find a space.  In Aventura just 5 minutes (I guess being a local has its advantages).  I also like Porcao, no doubt about it...although there is an Argentinian all-you-can-eat restaurant on Hallandale and US-1 called The Knife, that is pretty awesome too.  Ask Nick M - he tears the place apart.

Nope, that's the truth.  I used to live in Bay Harbor and the woman liked Aventura (well, it's not far from Hollywood either) and we learned to parked by...I believe it's a Sears, instead of driving around and fighting the world.  I've never driven around Sawgrass.  Always within a 1 min. walk to the building.  Maybe I'm just lucky.

I have seen The Knife and will have to try it soon.

Tchaka - Bay Harbor is where my office is - I love that island, such great energy and close to everything!  Have you been to Aventura lately?  There's major construction (adding a Nordstrom) and more parking, plus tons of new stores and restaurants.  What's difficult about Knife is knowing the cuts of meat (Argentines go by cuts) - but I try a little of everything and come out very happy!

Wow, I just saw your address.  Isn't that the best place to be?  We lived at Island Pointe at the NW tip of the island.   Nothing but water everywhere!  We always walked around so I'm pretty sure I went by your office.  I was a regular at the BofA and the Regions.  Next time I'm in the area I will stop by and say hello.

I haven't been to Aventura (mall) lately mainly because I tend to dislike malls in general.  But I'll take your word for it.  I did hear Nordstom was coming (we have that back in the DC area).  Once Ikea gets here, South Florida will have arrived!  :-)

Grillfish is in South Beach...Collins and 16th or 17th...it was the inspiration for the Bonefish Grill chain.
