What 2008 taught me

Live Each and Every Day as a GIFT as it has been given to us.

Valuing every precious moment is no longer wasted.  My brother lost the love of his life, his soulmate of 10 years in marriage.  She was in the hospital for tests.  She wasn't hooked up any monitors, as so I was told.  She took pain like a soldier.  She walked the halls her last night with my brother discussing what they wanted to do, their plans, their dreams.  She was to be released from the hospital the next day so she could gain strength and have her gallblader removed.  And at 5:30 the next morning, her heart stopped.  So did their dreams.

I think about my brother and the long hours that he always has worked.  I'm sure he has questioned the relevance of work vs. family.  He is a dedicated father and enjoys his children and grandchildren.  He's made time for our father, who until recently, couldn't see.  He has spent time with the nephews and nieces, especially our "oops" kid who has been the biggest blessing to our entire family.

I have no idea the stabbing pain my brother feels for the loss of Shelley.  She was an extension of him and he her.

If my brother knew that he would loose Shelley so fast, I believe he would have made more time to spend with her.   When he went turkey hunting, she went turkey hunting.   They had an awesome marriage and a love with dedication.

MAKING A WISH AND DREAM COME TRUE can no longer be done with a credit card.   I was never a believer in credit cards as my Grandfather ("Opa") enforced the idea of "if you cannot pay the money back in 30 days, then you do not need it.  You do not borrow it."

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES' is now referred to as "COMPETING AGAINST THE JONES' " when trying to sell your home.

That an occupation as a babysitter claiming a salary that a teacher would make, possibly as high as some vice presidents was one way to get your loan approved so you could purchase a property that you couldn't really afford happened alot.

That underwriters were threatened their jobs if they didn't say "yes" to unqualified mortgage applications because relentless pressure to churn out loans that produced loans alot.

That some banks created a system that enabled real estate agents to collect fees of more than $10,000 for bringing in borrowers.

That I need to take more deep breaths.

"Close the door to one room before you enter the next room.  Never bring the furniture from the Living Room into the Basement." - my friend

That the Loan Applications from defaults or potential defaults are bogus in some form, shape or manner.

Consumers rights were violated under TILA and the word needed to get out to them.

If you have "unclean" hands in your loan, you don't stand much of a chance to renegotiate your loan.

That the American People still have a voice!

We have the right to be heard and did so on the Failout on the Bailout.  We spoke to those who we have voted/hired to represent us and tell them "Enough is Enough."

"In God We Trust" is a true reality.

I've seen fellow Realtors and Real Estate Professionals come together to join forces and create the voice of concern, participation, cares  and giving of time to assist and lay the path for a better direction in homeownership.

To stop YAPPING.  To just turn off everything that is going on in our world that pulls us away from the very moment that we are in.  When we stop YAPPING ..... that's when we learn.

Pay Closer Attention - be more observant.  America is reactive and there is a strong need for being "pro-active".  Stop saying "oh, well."

To reflect and be greatful that we still have a voice to be heard.   To tell others, encourage others, take time to listen and yes, even smell the flowers.

Don't take for granted our time, friendships, family, business relationships because they can be there one day and not the next.

As my grandfather used to say, "when you are with someone, act as if it would be the last time you will ever see them and you will never regret should that time come."

Barb - your grandfather was a very wise man. I love his suggestion to act as if it is your last time with someone. Always be sure they leave the house, go to sleep, or leave your company with a hug. sometimes actions speak louder than words.
