There is still something about New year's Eve that I have thought ever since I was young, the flipping of the calendar page so to speak is actually quite eventful to me. The start of something new & fresh has always been a bit inspirational to me. Corny? Maybe. But true. Wrapping up one year and putting it in perspective, evaluating goals in life met, and others to still strive for - I like it. And I am not talking about your usual "resolutions" - its a bit more than that - most people don't meet their resolutions. These are goals and reviewing of them. Real written down goals with a plan of action. So, it should come as no surprise that I do enjoy the whole New Years Eve celebration since I have new goals each year. Now personally, I am not talking a big rockin' party kind of person - last year I spent New Year's Eve with my family enjoying a wonderful Beef Wellington dinner at a condo in Frisco, CO and then we skied at Copper Mountain New Year's Day. This year I will ring in 2009 with good friends at their home nearby. So although I do it a bit more quietly than some, I am still very much a New Year's Eve kind of guy.
So if you have just moved to Denver, are new in town and still looking for some ideas - here is a few for you to celebrate the new fresh year.
If you are headed downtown, there will be a chance to see fireworks in Denver at both 9:00 pm tonight and midnight of course as well. The earlier show is perfect for those with little ones that still want to catch the excitement but can't stay out as late. Anywhere on the 16th Street Mall will offer you prime fireworks viewing.
There are also many Denver area restaurants with reservations still available that have fabulous set menus for New Years and of course many places throughout the town with bands and other special events as well. There are also great concerts around town tonight as well, such as the annual Big Head Todd and the Monsters New Year's Eve concert and Widespread Panic as well. Good tickets for both may be hard to come by at this point. The Westword also has an extensive list of planned celebrations, check their for organized hotel celebrations, clubs and restaurants. You can also still get a cab voucher for tonight from many Denver restaurants - so if you are going to be our partying, this is a great way to get home, as well as Denver Light Rail. To see a list of participating restaurants, click here. There are also many Denver area hotels offering fabulous deals that still have availability tonight - so staying downtown is still a great option as well.
Many of the big holiday lights attractions are open tonight as well - some with special events. At the Denver Zoo, the Zoo Lights becomes Zoo Year's Eve from 5:00pm to 9pm with a special midnight countdown for the kids at 9:00 pm. Out in the south suburbs, the Chatfield Trail of Lights will be lit and cheery tonight as well at C470 and Wadsworth. Their hours tonight are 5 - 8:30. Both of these great attractions will remain open until January 4th.
Another great option would be at the newly opened Denver South Comedy Works at The Village Shops at Landmark. Comedian Chris Bliss will be entertaining with 3 shows this afternoon and tonight, and the 5pm show is marked as all ages. This paired with a celebration dinner at one of the numerous Landmark restaurants would be a great time!
If skiing is more your style, its not too late to pack it up and head to the hills today. Many resorts and condos still have great availability at reasonable rates for tonight. And skiing on New Years Day is a Denver local secret (shhhh….!) Resorts are often less crowded as those that were out all night celebrating skip New Years skiing. As I mentioned above, we were in Frisco last year and skiing at Copper Mountain on New Years Day was fantastic!
Whatever you do, have fun, be safe & happy New Year! See ya in 2009!
