Tips for a Green Remodel for Your Kitchen

Do you want to "go green" when remodeling your home's kitchen? If you are planning an eco-friendly remodel, here are some tips to help you:

Go Green:

  • Consider hiring "green" professionals.
  • Consider what to do with removed materials. Consider reusing materials if applicable to other projects, resell, or donate.
  • Choose your "green" materials. Look for products certified by The Greenguard Environmental Institute (www.greenguard.com), the Forest Stewardship Council (www.fscus.org), or Cradle to Cradle ( www.mbdc.com/c2c/).
  • Look for eco-friendly substitute materials:
    • Linoleum instead of vinyl
    • Low or no-VOC paints
    • Bamboo, cork, or reclaimed wood
  • Choose Energy Star appliances.
  • Use formaldehyde-free cabinetry or go for wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
  • Install recycled-content glass countertops.
  • Install a water filter as an alternative to buying bottled water.
  • Utilize natural light with well-placed windows, skylights, and sun tunnels.
  • Keep the refrigerator out of the sunlight and away from the oven.

While I think it's admirable, I really don't think anyone is going to be looking out for and asking around for a Green Realtor.  There are people that do this for their jobs, they'll call them first. All these different designations are interesting, I'm all for learning so don't get me wrong, but in the 20 years I've been a REALTOR maybe one person has asked about my different accreditations.

Hey, Trey. I thought Linoleum was a company brand name. Many of the pre-1980 Linoleum has asbestos in it. Also, you have a term which I'm not familiar with. Probably many others are not familiar with it either: low or no-VOC paints.
