Book MeMe

It's about General Alexander P. Stewart and the Civil War in the West

As one of the few higher ranken officers in the Army of Tennessee to avoid controversy, General Alexander P. Stewart was an outstanding but not outrageous leader. You get to read the life of this undeservedly obscure general from his early years at West Point through his involvement in nearly all of the battles fought by the Army of Tennessee to his postwar career as an educator and Civil War park commissioner.

Now for page 56

Stewart admiringly wrote that his brigade, pressed forward under a galling fire, with a coolness and yet impetuosity that could not be surpassed. The 4th and 5th contionued to support Maney's attack on the extreme lift, combining with Maney to eventually drive Brigadier General John Starkweather's brigade off the next rige to the west of Parsons now overrun position, the area of the present day park known as " Starkweather's Hill. Before this final assault, Captain Oscar Gilchrist of the 4th Tennessee ordered his men to lie down, making the practical remark: If you don't, the Yankees will shoot you!" The 4th's color bearer fell, so Lewis White pickecd up the standard and placed the broken staff in the muzzle of his gun.

Happy New Year's Dale. I wish you the best. I will have to check out the book. I have been reading some books about what was happening in Texas from the 1820s to the 1880s, so maybe I should look on over at Tennessee.

I have to check out The Dark Corner of the Confederacy; the other I have read. My family was not here in Texas. The first relatives that I know about were farmers in Iowa, but I do not know when they came to this country. My grand uncle was a merchant seamen who jumped ship in Galveston to go live with his relatives. Most of the Texas history that I have been reading just now deals with the German immigrant experience, but I try to pick up everything. I frequently take my son on road trips in an old Bug through all of the small towns searching out Texas history. There is quite a bit dealing with the revolution and break from Mexico, so we look into that time period quite a bit.

Hello again Dale, Thanks for the link, I am a history buff and always like new material. Several years ago, our family drove to Disney World from Texas and stopped at Vicksburg and several other Civil War parks and it was an enjoyable experience. I am just starting a book called "passoniate Nation" about Texas and ot covers Texas in the Confederacy in great detail.

Hope you are doing well after that horrendous ice storm and bets of the new year to you!
