Rainmakers needed

How about a Rainmaker's Convention?  Any help would be appreciated.  San Antonio completed 2008 with the driest 16 months September, 2007 through December, 2008, in recorded history.  We had less than 1" of rain in the past 4 months and climate scientists are saying the dry conditions could last until the fall.  The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) is considering implementing drought restrictions when the Edwards Aquifer falls to 660 feet above sea level.  The restrictions currently kick in at 650 feet above sea level but in conditions of severe drought this would kick in earlier and help conserve more water.

The area drought is classified as exceptional which is the worst category.  Residents can expect widespread crop and pasture losses and shortages of water in reservoirs, streams and wells.

Since September 1, 2007 we have experienced 16.4 inches of rain which is more than an inch less than the next driest period which occurred at the end of the 7 year drought of the 1950's.  2008, with 13.76 inches of rain, ended as the third driest year since rainfall record keeping began in 1871. The 0.96 inches of rain recorded since Sept 1 this year marked only the third time less than an inch of rain has fallen during any four month period, according to the National Weather Service data.

The outlook for relief is bleak.  The latest weekly forecast by scientists for the weather phenomenon known as La Nina indicates it's strengthening and could last until next fall.

La Nina, an upwelling of cold water in the Pacific Ocean, changes wind and moisture circulation patterns, generally bringing drier conditions to Central Texas.

Judi - How about we do a Rain Dance to help with the situation. Canyon Lake is sure going down, no water coming in and they are selling water to surrounding counties. Not Good.

How about that Rain Dance Gathering in the Spring? Whatcha Think? Sheila Moran said she was going to have us over for a Texas size BBQ to break in her new deck over at Gardenridge. We can take our dancing shoes, of course we have to get an official invite from Sheila.

Shirley, we haven't received much rain at all.  According to the article I read, we've only received 0.96" of rain within the past 4 months -- Sept., 2008 thru Dec., 2008.

Carl, we may have to get our dancing shoes on and do that rain dance.  I knew we hadn't gotten much rain, but I didn't realize until I read the article in the newspaper how little we've actually gotten.

I sure hope we aren't going to turn into a desert. Does anybody remember the drought we had in te 50's when Medina Lake was almost dry? Hope that doesn't happen again. With all these folks moving in we better PRAY FOR RAIN & DANCE TOO TO THE TWO-STEP TEXAS STYLE.

Hi Judi,    It surely has been dry but I'm praying for rain in the Spring.  Maybe we will get more than the weather watchers are forecasting.  YOu know they rarely are right. :)

Ricki, I'm hoping we get rain in the Spring too.  Without rain we won't have our beautiful Spring flowers (like last Spring).  :(   Hoping the weather forecasters are wrong and we get rain sooner than they think.

Carl, I hope we don't turn into a desert too.  I'm too young to remember the drought of the 50's.  :)   Do you think the Texas Two-Step will bring rain???  If so, let's all go dancing!  :)

Judi - Ceil and our neighbor runs outside and does a Raindance in the driveway everytime they see a dark cloud. It's this thingy they have going to see who sees the dark cloud first. Maybe one day it will work.

I'm going to do a little watering today to help keep the lawn alive; it is so dry.

Carl, you should take a video of that!  I'd love to see Ceil out there in the driveway doing a rain dance!  :)   If it works up there, I'll have to get her down here to try it too.

Our sprinkler system runs every Wed. morning -- in spite of that, we still lost a new shrub we planted in the fall.  The other 2 are fine -- that one just did not make it.  We found another one and Don's going to replace it sometime over the weekend.  He probably needs to check the alignment of the sprinkler heads by that one shrub -- maybe they need to be adjusted.

Well, Dale, I looked and looked for a Rain Dancer for my post and I couldn't find one.  And here you are with one to help us out down here.  Thank you, I'm sure we'll keep him busy -- we sure do need some rain.
