My father-in-law and his wife were in town between Christmas and new year's eve, and he wanted to take us all out to dinner.  We chose Texas Roadhouse as a viable option, partially just for its proximity to our house (about 10 minutes away).  We had been there once before and enjoyed it.

Despite the fact that the wait was a little longer than we had anticipated for a Monday night, and the country music was louder than we would have preferred, it was a great night.

Our waitress was enthusiastic and friendly, and our kids were treated to tableside balloon animals (lady bug and turtle for the girls, monkey for my son).  The guy doing the balloon art was raising money for a church youth ministry.  Clearly, he scored the mother lode at our table - I think we probably paid about $8/animal or thereabouts.

The food was excellent, based on the mini-reviews that I heard from our party of seven.  My father-in-law was so enthused about the green beans that he actually asked for the recipe.  I had the catfish, which was a LOT of food.  My wife had the veggie plate, and we ended up bringing about half of it home with us.

The atmosphere is fun and a little eclectic, with pictures of Willie Nelson and charicatures of Nascar drivers adorning the knotty pine walls.  There were at least five or six TV's on showing football games when we visited.  Additionally, they give you a small bucket of unshelled peanuts as a snack (just throw the shells on the floor if you like), along with warm yeasty rolls and cinnamon butter.

The aforementioned volume of the music would be my sole complaint.  When I mentioned it to the waitress, they did turn it down for us.

Texas Roadhouse is a chain restaurant apparently, with locations around the U.S.  This is the first one to open near us, and I would highly recommend it.  It's not overly expensive, nor would I call it "affordable" for every budget.  I didn't see our bill the other night, but I'm guessing that my family of five would likely pay $60 or so including tip.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT: My seven-year-old daughter was very excited about this place.  She said, "I liked it there.  We got balloon animals!  I also got to eat peanuts and act like a statue!"

In order to understand the last part of her quote, check out the photo of her and my son near the statue in the waiting area.  ------------------->

Hi Jason, The Texas Roadhouse here in San Antonio may be my husband's favorite restaurant here in town.  They have never had the music up too loud, but it would bug me if they did.

I love the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant! For a chain, it rates right up there with the "Outback Steak House" which I love. We just went there for my kids 12th bday on Tuesday.

We do not have a Texas Roadhouse here in Sparks but I know they have a killer salad bar. Glad you and your family enjoyed the evening, once you were seated!

We even have a Texas Road house here in Nashua NH.  I like it there for the same reasons you have stated, however, the wait and the loud music are definately part of the experience.

Jason,

Texas and the Hill Country have a lot of cool, independent places to go.  Got any reviews on real authentic local venues?

pflugerville restaurant review: Dot's Place - Pflugerville, Texas Restaurant Review - 08/21/08 10:44 PM
I finally experienced Dot's Place cuisine for the first time tonight, and I left happy.  We were looking for a place nearby to take our three children and my mother-in-law, Jackie, who is in a wheelchair now.  It turns out that Jackie had been there a good number of times before, ... (8 comments)

pflugerville restaurant review: Pflugerville Texas Restaurant Review - Pecan Street Station Deli and Grill - 07/17/08 06:01 PM
My wife and I took our three children (9 7, and 2) to Pecan Street Station yesterday evening.  They recently built a new location next to the Pflugerville Library.  Truth be told, we never went to the old location up the street, because it had more difficult access and parking.  In ... pflugerville restaurant review: Pflugerville Pizza and Wing Pfactory - Restaurant Review - 07/12/08 04:45 PM
About five minutes from our home sits the Pflugerville Pizza and Wing Pfactory (not a misspelling - this is how things are typically done around here, as evidenced by my recent post about the first annual Pfireworks Pfestival).  We had tried to visit this establishment not too long ago, but I think ... round rock restaurant reviews: Round Rock Restaurant Review - La Margarita - 05/10/08 10:23 PM
My wife and I took our three kids to La Margarita tonight, which is located in north Round Rock, just south of 3406 on the southbound frontage road of I-35.
I had heard some great things about this place from a friend of mine who called it his "favorite Mexican restaurant".  Overall, I ... (5 comments)

austin restaurant reviews: Austin Texas Restaurant Review - Café Mangù in Pflugerville - 11/22/07 12:09 AM

My wife wrote another restaurant review for my primary website (http://www.austintexashomes.com/) and I wanted to share it here as well:
Café Mangù is a small restaurant in Pflugerville serving "Caribbean" food.  The cooks hail from the Dominican Republic.  Some of the dishes, such as ropa vieja, we at Austin Texas Homes were familiar ... (5 comments)

austin restaurant reviews: Most Entertaining Restaurant Review Ever? EZ's on Lamar - Austin, Texas - 10/27/07 06:50 PM
Last night, I took my family to EZ's Restaurant on North Lamar about a block north of 38th Street, just across the street from the H-E-B Central Market shopping area.  This is a fun restaurant for the whole family, and the kids actually liked it so much, they asked if we could return ... relocation package: Austin, Texas Restaurant Review - Waterloo Ice House - 11/13/07 02:18 AM
Last week, I reviewed EZ's on Lamar.  This week, I focus on Waterloo Ice House.  Well, actually my wife decided to write this review for me.  My wife and kids visited two of the six locations, 1106 W. 38th St. and 8600 Burnet Rd.  She helped me write this review, so ... (29 comments)

Whoa... look at all those reviews!  I tried to invite you discreetly to my group, but that was before I saw all the reviews you did!  Now you definitely can't leave me hangin' and better get your butt a postin!

In other news, we have a Texas Roadhouse here in Gainesville, FL.  I go just about every Christmas to get my Grandpa a gift card there because he really likes it.  This year they were giving a chance to "spin the wheel" and win a prize with each gift card purchase.  The lady after me was buying 7 gift cards so she got to spin 7 times.  I was happy to win a dinner for one which I gave to my Dad in his stocking.  I told him he could take my Mom there and to think of it as "half-priced dining" lol.

How did you get all of those blog articles listed the way you did in the post above me?

Angela - I will try to remember to add these to your group, which I just joined.  I searched my own tags and found these (dropdown menu says "TAGS" on the sidebar), then just did a cut-and-paste to get them here.

Jason,

If all it takes to make your daughter happy try Rudy's BBQ on 183. The food is good and very reasonably priced. On Friday and Saturday they have a guy that does balloon animals for tips. Enjoy!

;)

BETINA - There was also a guy doing balloon animals at the entrance of the Fuddrucker's near Lakeline Mall one weekend when we went.  New trend, perhaps?

Jason,

did the kids like being able to put the peanut shells on the floor or did they have you use a pail to put them in?

Jason - We had a Texas Roadhouse (or Texas Hold 'Em as my wife usually calls it) back in Royersford, PA (a tiny town with little excitement - although its been growing like crazy) and I am a big fan.  Prices are great, steaks are their mainstay and are always done just right (and they check after you've cut into it to make sure you're happy), and who doesn't love throwing trash (peanut shells) on the floor.  I haven't been to the one here in town yet (but after reading Shirley's comment, I may just have to go).  I highly recommend their "choose your own steak" option as if you're a steak lover you can find the perfect one - size, marbling, cut, etc.  The people who work their steak counter are usually extremely knowledgeable.  I don't usually like chain steak houses (Outback, Longhorn, Sizzler - does Sizzler even exist anymore?), but this one and Texas Land And Cattle are always tasty.

Hi Jason - we have a Texas Roadhouse here in Portsmouth, and it's really good, too.  I've been there several times, and just love their hot rolls with honey butter.  I could fill up on those alone, with a beer of course.  Their meals are really good, and their waitstaff is always very good - happy and glad to be there is how they make you feel.

DON - Just throw the shells on the floor!  Actually, they provide an extra pail if you can't bring yourself to do that, but I like being creative, maybe even throwing some of them over my shoulder.  :-)

Jason - I'm thrilled you joined the group.  :)  I know it's a hassle to have to go back through and repost to the group, but I'll look forward to seeing your future restaurant reviews there!

I will give the tags experiment a try; thanks for answering my question.
