I know this going to sound strange, but last night was a first for a couple things for me. It was my first time seeing Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve countdown (well, I just saw the countdown part) and also my first New Years Eve Party.

Well, OK, not exactly my first, but my first as a guest! You see for 18 years, I was a DJ, so when I went to a New Years Eve Party, I was an employee. I was paid to be there and I really didn't pay that much attention to the people and what they were doing other than to make sure they were on the dance floor dancing.

But, last night, for the first time, I was invited to a New Years Eve Party as a guest and I got to kiss my wife at midnight and see Dick Clark do his countdown. But, what I also saw was a lot of people drinking... a lot. I've never really drank. I had a half a wine cooler on my 21st birthday and that really shows my party animal side.

But, I have to wonder why New Years Eve is such a heavy night for drinking and why so many people do it. You see, way too many people die each year because of the drinking and then those people making the choice to drive home afterwards.

You know what? I have to say I had a lot a fun at that party and I didn't have a single drink. So why does it seem so important to others that they have to drink to the point where the next morning they can't remember the ball dropping at midnight?

Just curious?

I have no answer for you.  I think it's very sad.  I remember Monday mornings in high school.  There were a few guys who would come to school and claim that they had a GREAT weekend because they couldn't remember any of it.  I sometimes wonder if those guys are still alive today.

I'm glad you finally had the opportunity to try New Years from the other side.  Like you, I don't understand the big party/drinking thing.

Thats funny. I used to DJ as well. It is strange being on the other side and not having to work.

How nice that you got to be the party instead of the entertainment!  I am sure your wife loved that!  As for the drinking I totally agree about too much but I do like a nice glass of wine or two!

But last night we went to dinner and then I was in bed by 11:00.  Ah well, maybe next year....

May you have a happy and prosperous New Year!

You got me on that one.  I had someone ask me how they got home last night and did I take them?  Nope, I didn't. I didn't even leave my house last night. Now that's scary.

Todd, I remember when I used to party hearty on the 1st (or any other celebration) and now I just don't get it. Plus, I'm always thankful I don't have to work the emergency room on New Year's Eve. I can only imagine.

Have a wonderful New Year with many blessings passing on your way!

Todd,

It has been so long since I have gone to a New Years party.  I don't like being out on the streets with a lot of intoxicated folks playing bumper cars.

Morning Todd,

Glad you and the wife were able to enjoy New Years Eve together. Good for you. Like you, drinking never occupied a place in my life. I attend parties and go out with couples and have a good time doing it. The difference is we come home sober and many others don't. Why? I have no idea. Those that do drink should be responsible enough to have a designated driver with them though.

Todd

I bet the food taste better when it does not have to differentiate with different types of alcohol.

Glad you had a great time

Gotta tell you...I love beer.  I mean I love it.  But I'm a married father of 5 and I like to function at high alert all the time.  I'm a mach one kinda guy.  Never had a problem with drinking.  I will say that the social or occasional drinker I don't have a problem with.  But, like you, I too, noted that everyone on all 3 stations were seeming out of control with their consumption.  I was never one to base a weekend on what I couldn't remember.  We had a great family night with 3 other families and about 9 kids and just a riot of fun.  It's so nice not to be a part of the insanity.

Todd, I don't understand all of the drinking myself. I enjoyed a quiet evening with my husband and a champaign toast at midnight, then right off to bed!

It's good that you and your wife shared a lovely evening together. What better way to bring in the New Year!

I pray you and your family have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Todd, As long as people have designated drivers I don't care how they celebrate. My wife and I spent the evening watching movies until midnight, had a glass of champagne to celebrate the new year and then finished the last movie. I hope you have great New Year...

Hi Todd... Congratulations on your first NYE party as a guest!  I have never understood the fascination of excessive drinking on New Years Eve.  What makes it so dangerous, in my opinion, is that it's like party night for amateurs.  People who never drink a lot seem to feel obligated to do it on this one night of the year and then, with their judgement and abilities impaired, get in their cars and cause mayhem in other people's lives.  Like I said, I just don't "get it".

Todd, what an insightful post. I feel just like you do....AND I don't typically DO parties anymore. The small talk doesn't work for me, and standing around, and trying to appear interested in the "all about me" conversations. Perhaps 'cause I've been there, done that, but I don't find it important at all to watch midnight come around anytime of the year. ;-)

So??? you were a DJ, huh? My husband and I DO love to dance though....;-)
