I see that the Homes and Land and Homes.com magazines are getting really really thin. The people are the same and I don't see anything new about them. The photos change but the message is the same. I am wonder how much of your business or leads are generated from magazines. Has there been a drop or has or is it the same as it has always been. I started in the business over 3 years ago and i had people call on magazine adds before but in the past year i have only fielded one call asking about a Homes and Land ad. I am curious to see if you are also getting the same results.

I noticed that recently the same thing when I picked up some magazines here in Atlanta.  No one looks at magazines anymore.  Do you?

Dear David,

My magazine ad calls are way down since mid 2008.

Early in 2008, I received a call from a magazine that resulted in my biggest sale ever!

I haven't cut back--probably should have. Now I am confused!

I shouldn't have been spending so much money on magazines the last half of 2008. I didn't make an adjustment. I was "wishing" that my calls would increase because their was less competition.

Now I have to make a 2009 decision! My finances will dictate whether I continue, and to what extent.

I haven't decided yet!

Barbara

Guess its time for everyone to reevaluate their budget for this year.  I don't put much stock in magazines or newspaper for that matter.

I only use one magazine and that is the least expensive one that allows you to use your IDX from the MLS to syndicate your listings to 22 websites....or I wouldn't be in that magazine.

David - I picked up a Homes and Land last week and I was surprised how thin it was. It was around half the size and had 2 agents sharing the ad.

Hi David, We have seen over the past several years the magazines getting thinner and thinner. Internet advertising is king today and I think magazines are becoming a thing of the past!

There was an article in the Washington Post recently that addressed the way real estate agents spend their money, starting with cutbacks in refrigerator magnet sales.  LOL.  Magazine advertising is just too expensive, and doesn't get the same results that online advertising does... I think we're going to see a lot of them go out of business in this housing market.

Thank you for all your responses,

I just heard from our brokers that we will be moving away from print advertising as an office.  If the numbers are correct you could generate 100% more leads using 50% of the money spent.

Print is just too costly and the followers of print media are not the buyers and sellers of tomorrow

I have yet to speak with anyone who refered to an ad they have seen in a magazine.  It seems to me that almost everyone is using the internet as their way to search for properties.

All magazines and newspapers are getting thinner. I remember when my PC World and Computer Magazine were a billion pages. Now they are down to about a hundred.

Our local newspaper has now combined its employment section with its "Our Region" section. When I came to San Diego in 1993, the employment section was about 20 pages. Now it's three.
